Moms do so much everyday to support and care for their families. To each of them, I want to wish a Happy Mother’s Day. While this day is a happy one for many, it can also be a sad day for those who have lost their mothers and for mothers grieving the loss of their children. To those struggling today, I hope the memories they’ve left behind bring some comfort.

76 years ago, people around the world celebrated Germany’s surrender that would mark the end of the Second World War. Over a million Canadians served and fought Nazi fascism, and over 45,000 gave their lives to ensure victory over Hitler’s tyrannical regime and uphold the values we still hold dear today. We continue to honour their sacrifices by standing up and fighting for peace and freedom against tyranny and genocide.... I am thinking of all those who fought in the Second World War and will continue to honour those who we owe a debt we can never repay.

In 2020, expectant mothers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic were barred from receiving CERB with the government pushing them onto EI maternity benefits months ahead of time, giving them less time with their newborns. 2021? Expectant mothers are again having their maternity leave cut short due to a Liberal policy that prevents new mothers from receiving their full 50-week EI maternity leave benefits. To qualify for the full 50-weeks of EI maternity leave benefits, e...xpectant mothers who are receiving regular EI benefits before giving birth need to file a new claim, meaning they need new insurable hours to qualify. So many mothers have lost their jobs during the pandemic through no fault of their own. They are being penalized and denied this crucial benefit because they cannot earn the required hours due to business closures, and massive unemployment resulting from Trudeau’s third wave. These mothers should not have to cut short precious time with their newborn children because of the Prime Minister’s mismanagement of the pandemic and failure to create jobs. The Government must reverse course and allow expectant and new mothers currently on EI to receive their full maternity leave benefits regardless of the number of insurable hours worked. As a temporary measure during the pandemic, this critical change would ensure pregnant women and new mothers can spend that time with their children.

Canadians are looking ahead to rounding the corner on COVID-19 and our country is at a crossroads. It’s time for a new path forward, one of security and certainty. That’s exactly what Conservatives can and will deliver.
