More than 40 representatives from various stakeholder groups attended a very successful meeting at Kawartha Conservation on Monday to begin the process of devel...oping a local Seed Strategy in the Kawartha and Peterborough region. This was initiative was triggered by the announcement that the Provincial Seed Plant would close this year. Local conservation champion, Ralph McKim, spearheaded the meeting. Mr. McKim, in announcing the meeting, explained the purpose behind it. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the need for, and viability of, establishing some form of Seed Bank and/or Seed Strategy to ensure the long term availability of locally-adapted native tree and plant seeds in our region. The meeting will bring together people representing local nurseries, field naturalists, land trusts, First Nations, academia, conservation authorities, a number of environmental groups and concerned landowners.
