Talking about #cancer is not easy. But today, on #WorldCancerDay, we are not just talking - we are working to create change. Last year, we introduced our first-...ever international cancer research fellowship program in partnership with UT Southwestern Medical Center, and now we are proud to welcome the first recipients, a group of international scientists who will be continuing their cancer research at UT Southwestern’s facility in Dallas. Dr. Shengyan Gao, from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, is learning new techniques and new ways of thinking about nuclear cell biology and cancer biology. I hope that my studies will provide a new avenue or strategy for the development of treatment for colon and liver cancers. We will test our approach for other cancer types as well. Dr. Gao is being mentored by Dr. Beatriz Fontoura, Professor of Cell Biology. Dr. Natália Bernardes, from São Paulo State University in Brazil, is focused on researching molecules that maintain the DNA organized inside the cell. Considering that our DNA has all the necessary information to keep our cells working, any problem with the DNA condensation machinery might lead to errors that can cause anomalous cell growth such as cancer. She’s mentored by Dr. Yuh Min Chook, Professor of Pharmacology and Biophysics; Eugene McDermott Scholar in Medical Research; and Alfred and Mabel Gilman Chair in Molecular Pharmacology.
