Noticed a few houses with an ice dam starting to form For those of us living in the Canadian Prairies, where the weather outside can be frightful one day and balmy the next... Freezing and thawing doesn’t just make the roads slick but it also may result in contributing to the formation of an ice dam. ... What is an ice dam, you ask? - An ice dam is basically a ridge of ice that forms at the end of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off of the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to your roof, ceiling, walls, insulation. How does an ice dam form? - Warm air from the attic along with freezing and thawing are contributing factors of an ice dam. We have witnessed some unfortunate results in properties. Keeping snow cleared off of your roof (at least the bottom portion) is your best defence against this. Have a great day
