Happy New Year everyone! We are glad to let you know that the Maskwacis Elders Mentoring Program is back! If you would like to speak to an Elder about your pregnancy, your partner's pregnancy, or your postpartum, the Maskwacis Elders are here to help. It can be stressful travelling a long distance with three kids in tow to go to an appointment at the nearest prenatal clinic. That's why for Mary Jane Saddlebac...k, mother of three, it's so refreshing to be greeted by an Elder once she arrives. She’s just always there and she has this warm, welcoming personality so it makes you feel comfortable around her," says Saddleback. "You don’t feel shy to communicate. The Maskwacis Elders Mentoring Program (EMP) brings Elders, called Nohkum or Kokum (meaning grandmother in Cree), to the Wetaskiwin Primary Care Network twice a week when the clinic offers prenatal care. I thought it was a good opportunity for me to pass on some of the teachings that Elders have taught me over the last 40 years, says Muriel Lee, an Elder who has been working with the program for about 2.5 years. I just felt like I could be a source of strength and hope to our young mothers.
