5 strategies to keep skills over the summer (If you read to the end, there is a bonus!) Many parents ask the following question(s) during summer months: "Should we take a break over the summer?" - which is usually followed by, "If we do, will my child's skills slip away?"... We all know that a break from anything is often healthy - we need to recharge our batteries. In fact, this process usually allows us to come back with a fresh, new and enthusiastic perspective. However, #Music is not just "any" #activity. Skills must continue to grow and complement each other. Muscle memory, hand coordination, reading skills, #musical awareness - i.e. ear training are just a few of the many skills involved while learning an instrument, and most importantly,as mentioned above, these skills are cumulative. So, if an extended break occurs during the learning process, we will need to rebuild and/or refresh the students' memory and skill. However, don't panic #Mom, #Dad. We have some creative thoughts on this and have packaged it nicely into 5 neat suggestions. Read on! 5 #strategies to keep skills over the summer: 1. #Encourage your child to still play their instrument. Playing is not practicing, and quite frankly is often much more fun! 2. Ask your child to teach you the basics of their #instruments, and if possible, a song. This will not only reinforce their musical skills, but also add a wonderful dimension to your relationship with your child. When was the last time your child taught you something? Enough said... :0) 3. Ask your child to play a piece for you and your family once a week - make a huge deal out of it! Depending on the age, other siblings could make invitations for family members and announce that Batman aka "Kyle" is going to perform one of their favourite pieces by the pool at 5:00pm this Friday. Don't miss out! 4. Remind your child that music does slip away. So if they forget some songs, it is absolutely normal. Stay positive! 5. Lastly, if possible, check in with your teacher for a refresher lesson. At this check in your teacher can suggest more fun activities. ***Bonus Strategy 6*** Listen to music with your child and talk about it. What do you like, don't like, why, why not?.... Getting your child to think and talk about music keeps many of the concepts fresh, and adds to enthusiasm for future activities. Help! my child won’t practice. What do I do? Who is responsible? Ask any parent and they’ll tell you, I took music lessons, but I stopped because I didn’t want to practice. It’s amazing how many people share this sentiment. Quite simply, practicing IS hard. The excitement of new lessons only lasts so long- then what? Who is responsible? The parents, the students, or the teacher?... Tough question- simple answer. I suggest all are responsible, BUT it starts with the teacher! Teachers must create an environment through proper repertoire and realistic goal setting. In addition, The teacher must understand the learning style of the student, and the dynamic of the family (how busy is their household?) in order to make effective suggestions. From this perspective, the teacher can then communicate with the student and parents to share the responsibility of practicing. http://masonstudios.ca/category/blog/

CHOOSING THE RIGHT #MUSIC #TEACHER AND/OR #PROGRAM Many families struggle with this question. When choosing a music teacher, most parents look to the obvious, such as: teacher’s qualifications, word of mouth form a friend, or likes and dislikes from their own teacher as a child. While these are helpful metrics, I recommend a good old fashioned meet and greet. Meet your potential teacher with your child and look beyond the tangibles! Ask yourself the following questions:... Will my child feel comfortable in this environment? Will my child’s learning style be recognized? Will this program support our real goals for music? Will it be both fun and challenging? And perhaps most importantly, is there a connection between the teacher and US (the family) Communication is paramount, and no one knows your child, your goals and your values better than you. http://masonstudios.ca/choosing-right-music/

Signing up for music lessons is a wonderful investment in your child and your family. However, choosing the right teacher and program can be a challenging task. To make things simpler, we suggest two things: Book an informal meet & greet.... This hour meeting will allow you to gather important information and will help significantly in determining the suitability between the teacher and your child, and of course, you the parent. http://masonstudios.ca/registration/
