we Honour them and we will Remember them Paying tribute to one of masterpieces resident And her family Mabel Jalbert (nee Nelson) - (September 10, 1928 - ) And World War II(1939-1945)... Otto Neilsen was born in Denmark and immigrated to Canada in 1903. Karen Brandenborg was also born in Denmark and immigrated to Canada in 1912. They met in Canada and were married in 1918 when Karen joined Otto on his homestead in the Meyronne/Glentworth area in southern Saskatchewan. Together they worked their homestead and raised five children. The three boys all joined the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II as their ages permitted. Andrew Nelson (Oct. 10, 1919-Dec. 7, 1979) the eldest child, joined the Army as a Signal Corpsman. He could not be accepted into the Infantry because he wore glasses. Six days after D-Day, he arrived at Normandy and was involved in the liberation of Holland. Years later, he received a medal, posthumously, from the Dutch Embassy in gratitude for his part in the liberation of Holland. While in England he met Phyllis Rider who was a Warden. Her job was to check when it was safe after an air raid and give the all-clear to people in the underground shelters. Andy and Phyllis were married in England and Andy brought his bride home at the end of the war to farm in Saskatchewan. Walter Nelson (Aug, 4, 1921-March 20, 2003) was the next oldest son and he joined the Air Force. He would have liked to train as a pilot, but apparently, was too tall. He ended up becoming a navigator in a Lancaster bomber and took part in night bombing runs out of England. After the war he returned to take over the family farm. June Nelson (June 1, 1923-June 14, 2019) was Mabel’s only sister. After the war, on April 3, 1950, she was married to George Wilson (Jan. 7, 1918-March 9, 1999), a veteran who was freed from a concentration camp at the end of the war and returned to Canada. Roy Nelson (Dec. 3, 1925-March 26, 2012) was the youngest of the boys. He joined the Navy as soon as his age would permit but received his assignment to go overseas just as the war ended. Yes, the results of the war included physical ailments brought on by shell shock, worry about accidently bombing the innocent, and surviving death marches. BUT THE BROTHERS CAME HOME!

Masterpiece is pretty darn proud to announce we are the first facility and independent living building to have its very own certified Therapy dog trainers and now Complex certified Therapy dogs Cooper & Max ! Their handlers Michelle and Alysha spent almost 7 months getting them ready for their testing before COvid -19 shut testing down exactly one day before . Thankfully their handlers were able to spend the last three weeks working with them in Masterpiece and preparing the... pups and trainers for their team evaluations , our handlers had hoped they might pass with a supportive pass but both teams did amazing work and both teams passed with a complex rating ! This means both teams are now able to go anywhere In the community to support any level of therapy needs with their amazing therapy dogs! Stay tuned for the amazing adventures Max and Cooper have inside Masterpiece and now supporting Medicine Hat and the community needing their unique skills !!
