Looking for a unique gift for someone this Christmas? Do you have a relative or someone special that served with 87 of our boys that enlisted with the Newfoundl...and Royal Naval Reserve during WW1? Why not pick up a copy of the newly released book Where Once They Sailed-Stories of our boys who served in the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve during WW1. Based on historical naval records, interviews with families and photos, the book preserves the stories of those who risked their lives for King and Country during a dark, troublesome time in our history. This data was collected by the Southwest Arm Historical Society over a four year period as a part of its mandate to preserve the unique history of our region. The section of the book entitled Supreme Sacrifice relates the story of those who did not return home. They lie buried on foreign soil or lost at sea. Their families would forever mourn the loss of a loved one. Brothers on the High Seas is another section of the book that tells about those who served with at least one other brother. (some had 4 brothers) The stress and heartaches felt by their families at home was a tremendous burden and price that was paid on the home front, waiting for news of their loved ones, hoping and praying that they would return safely. The book concludes with unique stories of the heroism of these men as they enforced the blockade against Germany in stormy North Atlantic seas infested with German U-boats. Heroism was also performed during the Halifax Explosion as our boys performed their duties and saved people's lives during one of the worst maritime disasters to occur on Canadian soil. This Christmas support the work of the Southwest Arm Historical Society as it continues to uncover our history, the history of the Southwest Arm region, by purchasing your copy of the book. Help support our local entrepreneurs, Trina's One Stop and Linda's Gas Bar, as they continue to provide us with their services.
