Capstones were an intrinsic part of Test Pilot School, with the aim of exposing students to a diverse range of aircraft and broaden personal aircraft experiences as students from Class 20A make their way into the flight test world. Capstones usually include various international locations, though for our class they were limited to the continental U.S. to mitigate COVID-19 risks. Regardless, students had the opportunity to fly the A-10, AC-130, F-15E, F/A-18F & G, B-1B, B-2 (s...im), B-52, L-29, P-51D and UH-1. Hooty hoo! The DC-3/C-53D Skytrooper was one of several qualitative evaluation aircraft flown during our Test Pilot School curriculum. Its history was not lost on us: this actual aircraft flew missions on D-Day, June 6, 1944, in support of the allied war effort. Built at the Douglas plant in Santa Monica, CA, it was one of many airframes redirected from civilian service to serve over the skies of Europe before returning home. Join students of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School, Class 20A, in the large four-engine Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker. Several flight hours were devoted to exploring multi-engine test techniques, including VMCA testing. Arguably the largest aircraft most students have ever flown, it was also nimble and flew like a fighter. I really miss the air show circuit, and this flight brought back some of the joy (negative g and all!).
