Math and Metal Machine

A couple months ago we had a crash with the manual lathe, the machine had just been purchased and the D mount pegs on the 3 jaw chuck were not property installed. We had not been far enough into the machine to notice, it would need to be removed to see the problem. The chuck actually disconnected from the machine and took off across the shop. It was pretty scary. In the last few pics you will see the damage. The compound slide was shattered and the tool post was not very hap...py either. The few hundred pound chuck travelled at speed like a wheel across the shop until it contacted a metal box and dented it. I made a special dovetail tool to cut the bottom of the new compound slide, it was quite the piece. We remanufactured the part to fix the lathe because it was not available to purchase, machine made in Brazil. We even custom made the gib. After repairing the machine we decided to make a carriage stop, our machine did not come with one. We cut an old micrometer and made the body ourselves. Mounted the body with a nice factory style clamp, and welded the cut micrometer into the body. It works fantastic! The carriage will never contact the chuck again... It also works for micro adjustments since we used a micrometer. I love it, couldn't be happier. Just a quick update since we are so swamped with work I haven't had a lot of time to post or even take pictures. Math and Metal has hired 2 employees and we have been finding our groove. We bought a killer band saw, guillotine saw it is awesome! Grabbed ourselves a really nice 300amp mig welder which has opened another avenue for the shop. In the next post I will outline a major repair we did on one of our machines... partnered with the provision we put in place to be sure ...that crash never happens again. Math and Metal Machine has grown the fleet! Brought in a couple new machines to make things easier on the guys and I. Manual mill and a manual lathe, both with digital readouts. They are quite new and run beautifully, I couldn't be happier.
