Our women scientists and engineers work hard and have fun while doing it! February 11 has been declared by The United Nations as International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The theme for 2021 is "Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19." This day reminds us that women and girls play an important role in science and technology globally, and their participation should be strengthened. According to the UN, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and only 30% of students enrolled in #STEM related fields of study are women. We are proud to have many inspiring women at Matrix who have chosen careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Throughout 2019 Matrix donated to charity for every Hazard, Near-Miss, or Incident (HNIs) our people reported. Each HNI includes actions taken to mitigate the identified risk - leading to safer outcomes for our people, clients and coworkers. Matrix teams got to choose the charities their funds would go to, meaning we had an opportunity to make a difference in the communities where we live and work. In total we donated more than $23,000 to some great causes. Great job Matrix people!

A great article from Trout Unlimited Canada describing their efforts to reconnect Caton Creek in Saskatchewan to allow improved fish passage. Matrix completed the design for the project, which involved augmenting a riffle downstream of a culvert outlet to raise the water level and improve connectivity of the waterway. Our team was proud to contribute towards TUC's Reconnecting Canada initiative.

We're pretty excited to be sponsoring the Western Manitoba Science Fair in Brandon on Tuesday April 9! Matrix Junior Environmental Technologist Chelsi Malach has volunteered on the planning committee for the event, which will allow more than 450 grade 1-12 students to showcase their scientific talents for parents, teachers, and the community. As sub-consultants we provided water resource engineering, regulatory services and environmental monitoring solutions for the Calgary Zoo Flood Mitigation project and City of Calgary’s 12 Street S.E.
