Our Education Rep Helen, brought her "new", Conn New Wonder Series II C soprano in for an overhaul in spring. This interesting little horn is 94 years old, but in no way shows its age. After a disassembly, chemical clean, and complete overhaul, this little horn is now the sax that Helen uses the most. Read all about this unusual little gem in an in-depth article that Helen published yesterday. https://bassic-sax.info/blog/2020/conn-new-wonder-c-soprano/

Facebook Pages is a crazy thing. Trying to make changes to our opening hours, and having them stick, is like playing Whack-A-Mole. No sooner have you made changes, when they seem to vanish, and the old hours appear again. After half an hour of fiddling with stuff--and then having to delete (I think I got them all) all the status update notifications that come from them--it appears as if our hours are now correct. Just to be clear, we are no longer open our extended hours. S...ince presumably most students have their instrument rentals for school, we have now resumed our regular hours: Monday: 1PM-5PM Tues - Thurs: 10:00AM-5:30PM Friday: 10:00AM-5PM Saturday: 11AM-3PM Sunday: Closed If in doubt, you can always find out correct hours on our website. No playing Whack-A-Mole there.

We are all doing the happy dance in the shop today. As of this morning, our online rentals are now fully operational! If you are looking to rent a band instrument for the 20/21 school year, come to our website and click on the Online Rentals tab. https://matterhornmusic.ca/t-plancodepage.aspx Just fill out the application and we will fill out your order and contact you to arrange a time for you to pick up the instrument. ... Yearly and monthly rentals are both available through our site. Our next job is to get our Online Sales up and running. Our Education Rep/web person has her work cut out for her as she sets all this up on our new E-commerce site. We just received a very large quantity of gear on consignment that belonged to a very well-known band leader in Vancouver who recently passed away. As soon as everything has been inventoried and priced, there will be lots of high-quality pro gear available for purchase. Everything from keyboards to drum accessories; rack components to pedals; and everything in between. As soon as things are photographed, they will be posted on our new website and available for purchase. So keep an eye out on this space, and we'll post updates on our FB page when we have our first batch of items for sale on our new E-commerce site.

Hope your summer is going well--albeit most likely much quieter than normal. All of us here at the shop have been busy. Our rentals have been coming back in, and school horns are coming in as well for their annual repairs. This is keeping David, Angus, and Devon busy with cleaning & repairs. Our Education Representative, Helen, has been tasked with getting our point of sale system set up, as well as creating a new E-commerce website that will finally be integrated with our ...rentals and sales. As a result, we are not seeing her much around the shop these days, since she is working from home. Summer in a music store often resembles those cars we see in overseas countries laden down with stuff. If you've been in our shop over the past month or so, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you need reeds, oil, grease, service on your horn, or anything else, remember that we are open, but with reduced hours to allow for proper cleaning of frequently touched areas. Give us a call before you come down. We are working behind closed doors to ensure proper physical distancing, and strongly encourage the use of non-medical masks while in our shop. From all of us here at Matterhorn Music, take care of yourselves and each other. We will get through this. It is just going to take a while.

We have been diligently working all through the current COVID crisis to keep musicians' horns in top playing condition. Now as BC is starting its next phase of re-opening, we have implemented the following safety protocols: 1. The doors will remain locked during normal business hours. When you arrive, please phone the shop at 604-596-7616. ... 2. Only 1 person (1 parent + 1 child is OK) is allowed into the shop at a time 3. All instruments brought in for service must remain in their cases for 3 days before they can be assessed for repairs. 4. All staff are required to wear non-medical masks and face shields when interacting with customers. Disposable gloves may be required.(Dependent on the situation.) 5. Customers are encouraged to wear a non-medical mask as well. 6. We have had to reduce our hours to allow for enhanced daily cleaning of frequently-touched areas. To see all the changes we have implemented, we encourage your to take a look at 2 PDF documents we have uploaded to our website. Together they form Matterhorn Music’s COVID-19 Response Plan. https://matterhornmusic.ca//2020/06/matterhorn-COVID-RP.pdf https://matterhornmusic.ca//uplo/2020/06/Response-Plan.pdf

Are you a trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn player? We just uploaded photos of nearly 70 mouthpieces that we have in the shop on consignment. They range from barely play-tested with the original box and its plastic bag, to well used. Brands like Dennis Wick, GR, Currey, Schmidt, The Wedge, Bach, et al. Check out our Used Pro Brass Wind Gear page to see them all. (And we apologize in advance for the thumbnail size image problems if you are viewing this page on your phone. We are goi...ng to be making some changes on our website in the coming weeks to fix the "issues" it has.) https://matterhornmusic.ca/used-p/used-pro-brass-wind-gear/

We are very pleased to announce that we are offering a new service here at Matterhorn Music. As announced on our website, we are now accepting saxophone overhaul and restoration work from customers outside Metro Vancouver. Regardless where you are, David would be pleased to make sure your vintage baby plays like new again. This could be especially appealing to our fellow Canadians who likely won’t want to send their saxes Stateside during the current border shutdown. To find out more about this service--including a full listing of what our overhauls entail, prices, as well as additional services offered--please visit our website for more details.https://matterhornmusic.ca/ser/saxophone-overhaul-services/

Did you know that we are still at work, and that you can still buy products from us? Yes it's true. Matterhorn Music staff are still hard at work cleaning, fixing, and restoring instruments like trumpets, trombones, tubas, saxophones, clarinets, flutes, and so on, and so on... Or, if you needs things like reeds, oils, cleaning swabs, neck straps, etc, we will help get those supplies to you as well. ... Curbside/porch pick-up and drop-off will be able for residents within Surrey city limits for repairs, estimates, as well as retail sales on all orders over $25. Just phone the shop at 604-596-7616. If David doesn't answer, leave a message and he will get back to you ASAP. If you prefer, you can also email him at: [email protected] If you live out of town and need your baby repaired, no worries. We have a method figured out for that as well. Just call or email David. Until further notice our hours will be: Monday-Saturday: By appointment Sunday: Closed

Did you know we carry some new Antigua woodwinds? Our Education Rep. Helen, just did a review of the Antigua Model 25 Tenor TS4348. You can read the review on her website: https://bassic-sax.info//review-of-an-antigua-model-25-te/ The alto review will follow early in January.... If you would like to come and try either the tenor or the alto for yourself, come by in the New Year anytime when the shop is open. If you'd like to do so when Helen is around, you will find her working in the shop most Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Matterhorn Music 02.08.2020

We have some interesting consignment horns at the moment. Two, count 'em, 2, Mark VI tenor saxophones! These are well used and could do with with an overhaul, but one plays amazing well even in its rough state. It went along to with our Education Rep. Helen, to a big band rehearsal and it had no problems carrying the Tenor 1 part. Helen said this about the Mark VI: "This is the most free-blowing Mark VI tenor I have ever played. It reminds me of my easy-blowing Zephyr, but ...with the sound of my Mark VI. When it is restored it will be a killer sax." Despite it being a late-model (235XXX), it is a fantastic Mark VI. Don't get all caught up in chasing serial #'s:get the horn that plays and sounds great for you. If you are in the market for a great Mark VI, give us a call and talk to David--yup, he's back. Ask about a custom overhaul to your exacting specifications while you're at it. Good news: If you book an overhaul at the time of purchase you get a discount. If you're particular and want special pads, no problem. Special resos? Got you covered. Certain kind of springs? Yup, we can accommodate you there as well. All our work is guaranteed, and 1 or 2 post-overhaul adjustments are of course covered in the cost. Here are a few of the photos of Selmer tenor 235XXX. All will be posted to our Matterhorn Music website in the coming days. The photos of the other (234XXX) will be finished over the coming days as well, and some more teaser pics will be posted when they're done.

Although we are open for another week before we wind down for our annual Christmas closure, all of us here at Matterhorn Music wanted to wish all of you a safe & happy holiday season.

Matterhorn Music 26.07.2020

We here at Matterhorn Music are hoping you are all well, and managing to find ways to keep your chops honed despite not having the regular rehearsal schedules you normally do. One of our staff members recently come across a stash of 1940s and 50s industry magazines, including Downbeat, Metronome, Musical Merchandise, et al. Over the next while we are going to feature some of ads and articles from these sundry industry rags both here on FB, as well as on our website. ... These nostalgic pieces allow us to look back at our industry fondly, and see how it, and the products some of us use, have changed in price, and evolved in design over the past 6+ decades. Since we want to be inclusive, we'll start off this series with something for almost everyone. We hope you enjoy this series. Stay healthy, and remember we continue to be here for your musical needs. Please call the shop for service, or supplies. David will make the appropriate arrangements.

Matterhorn Music 26.07.2020

Raining and overcast. Miserable day outside. But a perfect day for photographing horns in the shop!

Matterhorn Music 19.07.2020

Due to the covid-19 virus pandemic, our shop will be closed to customers effective immediately. However, both repairs and retail sales will be available--albeit in a slightly different format. Curbside pick-up and drop will be able for residents within Surrey city limits for repairs, estimates, as well as retail sales on all orders over $25. Just phone the shop at 604-596-7616. If David doesn't answer, leave a message and he will get back to you ASAP. ... If you prefer, you can also email him at: [email protected] If you live out of town and need your baby repaired, no worries. We have a method figured out for that as well. Just call or email David. During these uncertain times, many of us are practicing more in an effort to keep our mind focused on other stuff. In turn we also find ourselves burning more consumables like oil, lubes, reeds, etc. Don't worry, we have lots on hand, and will make sure you don't run out. Over the next while we will be updating our Facebook page, as well as our website's News page quite regularly, to keep you updated on what is happening at the shop. The main thing right now is that we all stay safe, and practice social distancing if we absolutely have to go out. Take of yourselves, as well of each other.

Matterhorn Music 14.07.2020

Fun day at the office today. Angus and Helen are play-testing the Antigua Winds Model 25 alto & tenor saxophones. Reviews and photos will be posted in the next couple of weeks.

Matterhorn Music 08.07.2020

During this current Covid-19 pandemic you've likely found your rehearsals and shows cancelled. If you have been putting off that cleaning, minor/major service, or overhaul on your horn, now is the perfect time to get it done. Call David to book a time to bring your horn in for an estimate. He'll have your baby back up and playing good as new. Since things are changing so quickly, please do call before you come down. If we don't answer, please leave a message and someone wil...l get back to you. Thank you. 604-596-7616

If you have a horn emergency while at the WestCoast Big Band Festival come see David at the Matterhorn Music display. We will be here both Saturday and Sunday. We've also got some horns and MPs for both brass and sax players to try out. For sax players we have some Fiberreeds to try as well. If you have never tried them before, this is your chance to do so. These amazing reeds are the choice of pros for a reason. The complexity of their sound is unique and hard to describe. Try one for yourself and see what they are all about.

We recently updated the Used Instruments page on our website. If you are looking for a gently-used French horn, trombone, baritone horn, or an alto saxophone, check out what we just added. We even have a very rare, antique clarinet circa 1890s. If you are into this kinda of stuff, be sure to check out the minty Albert system clarinet by Noblet. https://matterhornmusic.ca/instrument-sales/used-horns/

Can anyone figure out what the difference between these two saxophones is? The one on the left is one that came in for an overhaul today. The one on the right is a new one we have for sale. Bragging rights if you can figure it out/guess it right!

All the photos of both Mark VI tenor saxes are now up on our shop's website. We are also making some additions to the website. We've added an Instrument Sales area where we will feature some of the nicest of our new as well as used horns. If you're a brass wind player and are feeling left out, don't despair. Over the next few days photos and info about some interesting brass winds will be added as well. ... If you haven't visited our site in a while, maybe this sax porn may tempt you. If not, we'll let you know when the brass winds are uploaded. Maybe some trumpet porn will do it. https://matterhornmusic.ca/instrument-sales/used-horns/

Our new Education Representative, Helen, plays bari sax with this big band. If you like authentic big band music, you will like The Moonliters. Check them out on November 9 at Bradner Hall. You won't be disappointed. Also, if you're looking for some specific advice about your saxophone set-up, reed, MP, or other options, stop by the shop with your gear, or give Helen a call. She is usually around the shop on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Helen has been a professional sax player and teacher for 30 years. She plays soprano, alto, tenor, c melody, bari, and bass saxophones.

We are very pleased that we have been chosen by Oleg to be one of their dealers. We currently have some saxophone enhancers in stock as well as some of their superb neck straps. In a short while we will be getting a hard rubber as well as a metal Oleg tenor mouthpiece for trial. If you have always been curious about these fantastic products, give us a call and let us know what you are interested in.

I’m selling some of my musical equipment to make more room at my studio and finance some upgrades. I’d like to to give my Facebook friends a crack at this gear ...before it gets posted to CL or eBay. All items are in good condition and fully functional unless otherwise stated. Everything listed has been owned, used, and maintained by a professional musician. PM if interested! Mack Brass 410L CC tuba - $2000 obo 5-valve 4/4 size CC tuba. This is one of the better Chinese copies of the venerable Miraphone 186 CC tuba. Beautiful warm sound and very good pitch. Overall excellent condition - a couple of very minor dents/dings, lacquer is 98% intact. Recently worked on by Dave G @ Matterhorn Music - the valves are smooth and quiet and the slides all pull smoothly. This horn would make an excellent backup horn for a tubist, a great doubling instrument for a trombonist, or a perfect step-up horn for a keen student. Includes a decent foam-body case and a mouthpiece. These go for around $2500CAD new, plus shipping and taxes. Besson 2-20 Eb Tuba - $500 obo This is a former VSB horn, rescued a few years ago. It’s a small Eb tuba with a big sound, perfect for a beginner or a trombonist who wants to start doubling on tuba. Cosmetically ugly, but mechanically sound good valves, all slides pull smoothly. Odd mouthpiece receiver size, like many older British Eb tubas - a large bass bone mouthpieces works great. Until very recently, this was my go-to horn for Oktoberfest and Dixieland gigs, but I have recently upgraded. Comes with a leather marching strap and an old case (falling apart). Digitech Jamman Solo Loop Pedal - $150 obo Compact, full-featured digital looper pedal. Includes an additional footswitch for true hands-free operation. Operates on a standard 9V pedal power supply... I think I still have the original, if I can find it. Trombone .500 leadpipes - brass - $50 each: Edwards P3 (long), Kanstul S Trombone mouthpieces: Large Shank: Parke-Friedman 980-680-I - $50 Conn Remington - $25 Stork 4 - $40 Yamaha Alain Trudel - $30 Yamaha 59-GP - $40 Bach 5G - $25 Bach 4G - $25 Schilke 51 - $25 Bach 6.5AL - $15 No-Name (5G-ish) - $5 Small shank: Giddings & Webster Harry Watters (stainless steel) - $80 Yamaha 48D - $25 Hammond 12M - $50 Bach 6.5AL - $25 Bach 7C & Wick 6BS with custom Schilke 51 screw rim - $50 for the set All-Star Trombone (extremely small) - $5

Matterhorn Music 05.11.2019

This was a long term project, this Sax was it rough shape, tone holes were missing, the octave key mechanism on the body was missing, there were dents, the neck receiver had to be replaced. There was a major dent in the bell crook, the body was bent. First Step: I stripped all the keys, rods, springs and screws of the instrument and gave it a good cleaning. Second Step: I had to unsolder the bell to properly get to the bell crook dent and successfully removed those dents. Aft...er that I straightened the main body and removed dents from it. Third Step: All rods were worn and a right off. I replaced them all, realigned posts so the rod goes in straight The rods fit perfectly inside keys, however a little bit of swedging was required to remove the play between the posts(side play). Pivot screws were also adjusted to remove play. Fourth Step: The octave key mechanism, octave key guide, neck receiver, two tone holes and the lyre holder all were missing and had to be made from scratch. There was some forging, silver soldering, shaping involved.(This part took hours-I had to draw the key first and then there still is a little bit off guessing about where things line up since I had no example to go by) The parts were then polished and replated. Fifth Step: As all the existing tone holes were leaking through the solder they all had to be unsoldered, straightened and resoldered. Since the body is nickel plated I polished the nickel plating (Polishing would typically not be done if the instrument is lacquered or raw brass as you would take material off the instrument) Sixth Step: Replace corks and felts on the keys, replace neck cork, replaced all springs Seventh Step: Start repadding right hand- I left the bell off in order to make it easier to work on the right hand keys. It was a little awkward to work on that section of the horn. Once the pads were in I removed the right hand and resoldered the bell. Cleaned up the body again reinstalled right hand and continued with the repad. This took a long time too since old horns like that never line up, pad cups all had different depths and angles. I oiled all rods keys All this work took me hours and hours and patience from my customer But at the end it was worth it, I had a lot of fun with this overhaul. More pictures to follow
