Happy New Year to all. Annette and I spent yesterday fishing and Annette caught the first fish of the day. In Ontario like many other provinces we are on another lock down due to Covid 19. All non essential businesses are again closed and social gatherings are restricted to those in your household only. These rules are fairly easy for us to understand and comply with unlike many of our provincial and federal politicians. It appears that many of these politicians and thos...e holding high level government positions either did not get the message or are to stupid or arrogant to think that they would no get caught. Many took holiday vacations in Mexico, the UK, Greece, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Arizona, California, etc. We are the ones that pay these assholes? How many government employees are currently laying on beaches someplace warm while supposedly working from home? See more
If I’m not fishing I’m thinking about it!

Austen and John have spent a fair amount of time over the summer at the Ogoki Reservoir. They have been painting, refurbishing the 2 small log cabins, remodeling the shower house, building boat ramps, lots of painting, repairing docks, etc.
With the border closed to our US guests, we have had very few groups this season, however, we have not been idle. We have stayed busy catching up on overdue maintenance and improvements. One project we are currently working on is a new fish cleaning house and upgraded solar system at Short Lake. When the project is completed the cabin will have a full size electric refrigerator and full size electric freezer. There will also be receptacles to fulfill other 110 volt needs. In the next week we plan to start a similar upgrade at Mojikit Lake.

We hope that you all have been enjoying as much of the autumn season as possible!
Installation of the new solar array is now completed at Mojikit Lake and we hope to have the rest of the installation finished by the end of the month. Fall weather, which arrived early will make getting it completed a challenge. Shortages of materials brought on by Covid 19 has also slowed progress on most of this summers projects. The building behind the panels was previously a shower house which Austen & John moved across the yard to house the control unit and inverter for the system.
Austen and John spent the last week at Mojikit Lake building a new screened in fish cleaning hose and erecting the solar array for the new solar system.
Relaxing and enjoying some time spent in nature can do wonders for the body and mind.

You never know what type of wildlife you might see here at Mattice Lake Outfitters!
Still ice fishing! Yesterday (May 4th) we took advantage of some great weather and spent another day on the ice. These trout ranged from 8 pounds to just over 15. They all went back in the lake except for an 11 1/2 pound fish that was badly injured. There is still plenty of ice, however, by the end of the day we were sinking in 4 or 5 inches. This may be the end for the season. This is one of our secret lakes, so don't ask.
May 1st may have been our last ice fishing adventure of the season even though we still have lots of ice. We seldom ice fish this late in the season as we would normally be busy getting ready to open camps for the year, however, due to restrictions brought on by Covid-19 we are not sure when our camps will see their first guests. Fishing was great yesterday and we caught 1 lake trout between 15 and 20 pounds along with a bunch of smaller fish. Otis is guarding 3 of the smaller ones that we kept and the rest were returned to the lake.

Austen with a couple of fish that he caught yesterday morning. Unfortunately the northern swallowed the hook and he was not able to release it. The lake trout was almost 8 pounds and looks small when beside this big pike.
