I’m generally not a huge fan of my birthday and typically just let it pass by with a small dinner with my beautiful wife or a couple of close friends. This year with it landing on the heel of my most recent open heart surgery, I felt the need to embrace it and celebrate the blessing of being on this earth another year. I’m still on a high from being surrounded with love by some of the most important people in my life on Friday night. I use the word gratitude a fair amount, li...ving in the moment with full awareness of how fortunate I am on a number of levels. A beautiful and healthy family, incredible deep friendships and a career I never imagined possible. The feeling of gratitude for me is deep, starting and finishing my day reflecting on that. And so for my 39th birthday I want to say thank you - for this life and all the beautiful years ahead. life is what you make it, no matter the hand you’re dealt. MATT

This Christmas I received the gift of life thanks to an unknown organ donor’s aortic valve. As I sit here watching my kids open their gifts filled with excitement and joy, I realize I will never be able to show the extent of my gratitude for this selfless act. And so I will vow to live my life to fullest, love compassionately and take every opportunity I can to pay life forward. TEN days ago I had my chest opened for an open heart surgery called The Ross Procedure. TEN. Needless to say I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and love for all of the surgical and health care staff that not only performed the procedure flawlessly, but also for caring for me on a level I will never be able to repay. Dr Kent is unbelievably skilled and I am so fortunate to have had the privilege of his skilled hands performing my surgery. Thank you to everyone that has reached out, sent words of encouragement, have kept me in their prayers and helped my family through this time.
