#OnThisDay in 1878, Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore premieres, satirizing the contemporary Royal Navy, politics, and the social order, and unqualified people in authority. I'm an enormous Gilbert and Sullivan fan, so this is a piece of history near and dear to my heart.

In Matthew Quinn's excellent novel BATTLE FOR THE WASTELANDS, we see a tyrant scheming to continue his empire, and a young man rising up against his oppression. A great steampunk read! #steampunk #scifi https://matthewstienberg.wordpress.com//battle-for-the-wa/

Happy #VictoriaDay Canada! A peculiarly Canadian holiday which has been celebrated since at least 1845. Originally as a holiday to honor Queen Victoria, since her death it has taken on a number of meanings, from Empire Day to a general celebration of the monarch. For most of us in the 21st century, it's a pleasant holiday and the start of summer!

This book really broadened my horizons on the exploration of Mars. With all that we've seen in the last year, it convinces me that getting a human on Mars is more practical - and potentially closer - than we think! https://matthewstienberg.wordpress.com///get-thee-to-mars/

Another major character in my upcoming alternate history novel is William Seward. Though he was often castigated as a war monger in his day, he did quite a bit to ensure peace when push came to shove, and was a driving force behind the peaceful resolution of the Trent Affair. What if he hadn't been able to bring about peace though?

After a dry spell, I think I'm picking up writing speed again.

#OnThisDay in 1821, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, ex-Emperor of France and the terror of Europe, died in exile at age 51. It was not the end of the Bonaparte's though, a mere 30 years later his nephew, Napoleon III would overthrow the republic and proclaim the Second French Empire. It would also lead to Marx's famously oft wrongly interpreted quote that "history repeats itself, first as tragedy, and then as farce." Though the empire of Napoleon III lasted a smidge longer, it also went down in flames on the field of battle

I was today years old when I learned that there was a prophet named Alexander who swindled people through the supposed prophetic powers of his python cum fertility god Glycon.

#OnThisDay in 1919, the Winnipeg General Strike begins! 30,000 workers walk off the job in solidarity. It is, at this point, the largest strike in Canadian history and one of the most influential in the growth of the labor movement. For six weeks the city will be shut down by striking workers!

A great recent read. I love the Expanse series, and I'm sincerely looking forward to seeing how it gets wrapped up this year! https://the-m-at.blogspot.com/2021/04/babylons-ashes.html

Here's one for #SciFiFri as I catch up with James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante choking on BABYLON'S ASHES as the Solar system is engulfed in war. https://the-m-at.blogspot.com/2021/04/babylons-ashes.html

This month has been a big one for exploring the Red Planet, but some people think we spend too much exploring it. Let me tell you, we're not spending nearly enough! https://matthewstienberg.wordpress.com//instead-of-going-/

#OnThisDay in 1862, the Confederate forces of the Army of New Mexico took on a Union force at Valverde Ford in one of the most far flung campaigns of the American Civil War!

For the first part of the year I'm diving into the technothriller WWIII genre. Here's a look at one of the most famous by one of the biggest names in the genre, Tom Clancy. https://matthewstienberg.wordpress.com///red-storm-rising/

Interesting new story about the alternate history of solar energy from a website I have probably wasted too much time on over the years! https://matthewstienberg.wordpress.com//solar-dreams-a-hi/

An update of an older post, but still something I've given a lot of thought to! Science fiction has many unique avenues for exploring the future, but in our stories we do often take some ideas for granted. https://matthewstienberg.wordpress.com//things-science-fi/

I didn't need science to tell me this.
