Quiz White pine is in decline in the park after years of logging and fire suppression. Our prescribed fires help the regeneration of this tree. True or false? White pine produces much more cones at the age of 90 than at 60 years old.
The number 50 has a place of honor this year for the park's 50th anniversary! Three species of turtles can be found in the park: the wood turtle, the snapping turtle and the painted turtle.
The late opening of the park this summer seems to have had a beneficial effect on the wood turtle. We found a record of 5 nests in the park! We just set up a new egg-laying site to help the reproduction of this endangered species. It is covered with sand and it is located in a sunny area near a body of water to allow the baby turtles to quickly find shelter from predators.
We have witnessed a special moment: a beaver broke through the ice with its head to breathe like a seal!

The drone is an effective working tool for the conservation team. It is currently used to evaluate the number of logs at the bottom of basin 1 of Wapizagonke Lake. The team plans to remove them to restore the lake's aquatic ecosystem. Psst In the park, the use of a drone is reserved for restricted activity permit holders.
We explore the bottom of the lake in search of a treasure: a spawning site of the arctic char that is a rare species in the park! Our underwater camera and our lights allowed us to spot some fish during this night expedition. We have to wait for the perfect temperature for a better visibility underwater: a night without precipitation or wind.

The landscape at the beginning of the Mekinac Trail has changed over the last 100 years. Fields have given way to wetlands surrounded by forest through fire restoration. The trail now passes through a young forest with many beaver ponds.
