Shearing night tonight. Everyone is happy to be rid of their thick wool coat! There’s always so much propaganda in the media about wool and how cruel it is as a textile, so night’s like these are so wonderful because I get to make a big long speech post and hope someone out there learns something new and changes their opinion - in favour of wool products!! Did you know that sheep need to be shorn annually in order to keep cool, clean and comfortable? A professional shearers... job is to gently and (relatively) quickly clip the wool from their body using electric clippers (shears). These shears may look aggressive but in the hands of an experienced shearer they are rarely dangerous (just don’t put your fingers near one when they are running!) Contrary to what PETA would have you believe, a sheep’s wool is removed without damaging their skin or harming them in anyway. They are left with a thin layer of wool covering their skin as protection from flies, parasites and sun exposure and they enjoy their summer much more when they aren’t lugging around that wool coat! Environmentally speaking wool is an amazing resource! Not only is it naturally occurring (hello no harsh chemicals, plastics, emissions from factories etc) but its sustainable, long-lasting and durable, flame resistant, lightweight and breathable! It’s also a great insulator! We personally use ours for insulating farm buildings like chicken coops and dog houses! It’s pest resistant too! Don’t let propaganda convince you to boycott a product that benefits the environment, the animals, your local economy (think farmers, Shearer’s, spinners and crafters) and you!!
