Although this article was published in the UK, the main message is just as relevant in Canada: with the ongoing pressures on our public healthcare system to reduce costs, Occupational Therapists are poised to play a prominent role in keeping "people out of costly hospital beds and care homes" and living safely and independently at home for as long as possible. https://www.facebook.com/kecia.singh/posts/10152697398701939

Q. When should you consult an occupational therapist? A. When you are having difficulty accomplishing activities at home (or at work or play). You may have a physical limitation such as: arthritis, diabetes, low vision or hearing or an injury, that is affecting your ability to accomplish activities independently. Occupational Therapists are problem solvers. We look at how the person, the activity and the environment interact to support or impede an individual's function; and determine how to maintain or gain independence and ability. Our intervention strategies include education, recommending different ways of doing an activity and/or prescribing assistive devices or mobility aids. We are client-centred and collaborative and our focus is on maintaining independence.
