Max Bell School of Public Policy 24.09.2020

David Dodge, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and former Deputy Minister of Finance Canada, will be a panelist at Choosing the Right Target, the Max Bell School's fall conference. Over the course of his career, Dodge has occupied senior roles in the public and private sectors, as well as academia. Prior to his seven-year term as Governor of the Bank of Canada, Dodge was a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser Univers...ity. He previously served as Canada's Deputy Minister of Finance, and later as Deputy Minister of Health. Dodge currently co-chairs the Global Market Monitoring Group of the Institute of International Finance, is chairman of the board of directors of the C.D. Howe Institute, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and is a member of the board of directors of Canadian Utilities Limited. Sylvain Leduc is the Executive Vice President and Director of Economic Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and he will be speaking at tomorrows Choosing the Right Target conference. From 2016-2018, Sylvian served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. He was one of two Deputy Governors responsible for overseeing the Banks activities in promoting an efficient financial system. As a member of the Banks Governing Council, he shared responsibility for decisions with respect to monetary policy and financial system stability, and for setting the strategic direction of the Bank. Dr. Michelle Alexopoulos, a Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto and a Bank of Canada Fellowship recipient, will be one of the experts presenting at our Choosing the Right Target conference. Dr. Alexopoulos has authored numerous papers in the fields of business cycles, technical change, and economic uncertainty. She has also served on the Executive committees of the Canadian Economics Association, the Canadian Women Economists Network, and the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Economics. Congratulations to our MPP student Sumaiya Kabir Talukder who joins the Canada West Foundation today! Supported by the Max Bell Foundation, Sumaiya is one of this year's Policy Scholar recipients. She will be conducting research on Canada's clean energy innovation ecosystem, analyzing its performance, and creating solutions for its optimization.

The city of Montreal is home to a variety of noise pollutants, including transportation, aviation, and construction. This Policy Lab frames noise pollution as a public health issue, and proposes the establishment of a noise observatory model to mitigate this issue. Our MPPs also provided a comparative analysis of Montreals noise management in contrast with various cities around the world. In the midst of a climate crisis, there is an urgent need for governments to prioritize sustainable initiatives. In this Policy Lab, Max Bell MPP students analyzed the different stages of transitioning Canadas natural resource sectors towards a circular economy. More specifically, this briefing examined the mining, energy, and forestry industries, and elaborated on the various obstacles that stand in the way of achieving an effective circular economy.
