Mayor Harry Hughes 08.02.2021

The Township of Oro-Medonte is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our Deputy Mayor Scott Jermey. The Township flags have been lowered to half-mast. Council & staff extended our sincere condolences to his family & friends during this difficult time.

A sad day in Oro-Medonte. Scott Jermey you will be missed by so many. Thank you for everything you have done for those around you. Love to your family during this difficult time!... Rest in Paradise Scott! Mayor Harry Hughes said he was in disbelief when the township’s acting CAO called him to share the news. Hughes had a lengthy phone conversation with Jermey the night before. He seemed like there were no problems. I guess something happened during the night, Hughes said, adding he was not aware of the circumstances of Jermey’s death. The mayor described his colleague as upbeat and very active in the community. He was really astute and intelligent. He had a lot of energy. I’ve never seen anyone come more prepared and thoughtful in my experience on council, Hughes said. He’ll not only be missed on council, but he’ll be missed by others for everything he did in the community. He was really good to work with. He was an excellent deputy mayor. Jermey, a dairy farmer, served one term as Ward 5 councillor before being elected deputy mayor in 2018. "Our thoughts are with his family at this time," said Hughes. Jermey’s death leaves two vacancies on Oro-Medonte council. Ward 2 Coun. Scott Macpherson died Nov. 6 following a lengthy illness. The township will have to first officially declare both seats vacant before deciding how to fill them. The options are byelection or appointment. We haven’t discussed filling positions yet because neither position has been declared vacant, Hughes said. It’s unclear when that discussion will come before council. Hughes did not know exactly how old Jermey was, but the deputy mayor was in his 50s. With - Harry Hughes - Team Hurricane Harry

"If you’re going to have your car break down, Oro-Medonte is the place to be! Thanks to the help of the amazing Mayor we were able to get back on the road back home. He saw us on the side of the road and without hesitation stopped to see if we needed help. When we told him what we needed he instantly turned around to see if he had a part at his house, when he didn’t, he came back and picked us up to go to the hardware store to pickup what we needed. We tried offering money but he wouldn’t take it, he just wanted to make sure we were safe. We’re so grateful for such a genuinely kind man to come save the day! If it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have made it home that night." - Scarlett Quinlan and Dylan Good Team - Hurricane Harry !

To ensure that Oro-Medonte continues to be a safe, desirable place to live, work and play, the Township’s operating budget has been increased by 2.93 per cent. This increase will provide for continued investment in the services which positively impact roads, bridges, parkland, recreation/leisure opportunities and buildings for residents.
