Congratulations to George Clements on receiving the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in a ceremony held this morning at the Bonavista Fire Hall. For more than 30 years, George Clements’ volunteer efforts have had positive, lasting impacts on the community of Bonavista. Since the 1980s, George was involved with the Bonavista Primary Health Care Council, serving as the vice-chair for the Peninsula Health Care Corporation and, working towards the creation of a new hospital, he ...served as chair for the Bonavista Hospital Building Committee. In 1984, George was the coordinator for post-secondary institutions across the province to ensure that students were provided with an opportunity to meet Pope John Paul II during his visit to Newfoundland and Labrador. In the years leading up to 1997, George volunteered with Vista 97 helping to plan the major provincial commemoration of the 500th anniversary of John Cabot’s landing in Newfoundland in 1497. He served as a coordinator for community events and a liaison with Bristol, England and Buckingham Palace as the celebrations included a visit from Their Majesties, the Queen and Prince Phillip. George is also a lifetime member of the Bonavista Lions Club where he volunteered for club initiatives including a monthly breakfast program and organizing Red Cross donations. He has also volunteered to support groups like the Bonavista Peninsula Inter Faith Seniors Foundation, the Bonavista Boy Scouts, the Bonavista Rural Development Association, the Vista Family Resource Centre, and others. His contributions have helped improve the wellbeing and cultural vibrancy of the community, and province.
