The Town of Hay River and a special guest would like to provide some information about the weather changes occurring over the next few weeks! With the temperatu...res now dropping below -25 for the next little bit, here are some important reminders when going out in the cold. -When going outside for longer periods of time, make sure to wear extra layers of clothing -Pack an extra set of gloves and a nice pair of mitts that are bulky and will block the wind (similar to Bernie’s) -Keep hydrated the best you can, including warm fluids such as hot chocolate -If you begin to develop signs of frostbite, get out of the cold and into a warm area immediately to prevent further damage -Please keep your pets warm and dry and provide them with adequate shelter if outside. As always, if you or someone else is experiencing a cold weather emergency, do not hesitate to contact the Hay River Health Centre (867-874-8050) or the Hay River Ambulance (867-874-9333) for further assistance. If you have a concern about the welfare of an animal please contact the Protective Services Specialist at 874-6522 ext. 243. We would like to wish everyone a Safe and Healthy Weekend!

June 21, 2020 National Indigenous Peoples Day Mayor and Council of the Town of Hay River would like to recognize the contributions, culture and rich history of ...our local indigenous people as the nation celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day. We are fortunate to live in such a diverse community where we work, learn, play, and develop relationships together with a common goal of community betterment. Achievements of our local indigenous people have been plentiful. However, we recognize that there are still many challenges today that we can overcome together. On this beautiful summer day, we ask that residents of the community take time to celebrate but also understand the past and current challenges our indigenous groups face. Thank you

Social distancing and Self isolation These are difficult times for us all. As northerners and Canadians we aren’t always comfortable or understanding of Governm...ent rules and regulations. Especially when it seems our freedoms are being infringed on. The North has always been reflective of the spirit of the individual against the elements. I know how you feel. Maryann and I have been self-isolating except once a week for groceries and essentials for what seems like a month. We miss our family and friends, especially our grandchildren. Thank god for the outdoor trails and the amazing opportunities they provide for walks and fresh air. There is no better way to deal with the stress these times have forced upon us. I have the privilege to work via zoom with some amazing people during this time. It is important to know that your Mayor, Council, and Town staff are working tirelessly behind the scenes with the various levels of government to represent you. The CEO, leadership and every employee of the Hay River Health and Social Services Authority (HRHSSA) are working tirelessly to protect and plan for the citizens of the South Slave. Your HRHSSA are full partners in the pandemic planning and the Territorial Pandemic Response Plan. I had an opportunity to review the draft of this plan which we hope to be released next week. It is a sobering document that is designed to respond to levels of the pandemic in the North. In worst case scenarios there are difficult ethical decisions that may be required if community spread of this virus occurs. That is the important message I want to convey. We have to stay vigilant and committed with the rules around social distancing and self-isolation. It is our only defense against this virus. Our health system, and in fact no health system, is designed for this type of plague. These measures are for the collective good and more importantly to limit the strain on our health system and its employees. Please consider that at this time it is not about the individual but about the collective wellbeing of each other and the systems we have designed to protect us all. Stay healthy and safe.
