Update on new COVID-19 cases, Ontario 745, York Region 105, Georgina 7. We have 58 active cases with 8 hospitalized. I am sorry to report that another resident of Georgina passed away. We offer our sympathies to his family and friends. *"On February 1, Toronto Public Health (TPH) migrated all COVID-19 data to CCM from their local CORES system. This migration had an impact on today’s data. Most notably, TPH’s case count is negative following the identification of duplicate ...cases and there were data corrections for some fields (e.g., longterm care home residents and health care workers). As well, case counts for other PHUs may have been affected by system outages related to the migration. Additional data fluctuations may occur over the next few days." See more

The Town of Georgina is excited to announce Panattoni Development Company has acquired 200 acres of zoned industrial land at the northeast corner of Woodbine Avenue and Glenwoods Avenue in Keswick, which can be readied for immediate development. The site is located three kilometres from Highway 404 in an area that has seen considerable growth. With another 2,500 residential units in the approval process and the new Multi-use Recreation Complex scheduled to be built nearby, this development supports Georgina’s commitment for well-balanced economic growth. Great to have Panattoni Development moving forward with the Business Park. This is a private sector development but we are looking forward to working them. This is a good news story for local jobs and strengthening our tax base.

Update on new COVID-19 cases, Ontario 3,338, York Region 231, Georgina 7. We have 70 active cases with 5 hospitalized including 2 in ICU. Premier Ford apparently will be announcing additional lockdown measures tomorrow and more details on the modelling data for cases in Ontario. Our cases count remains high, please we have to follow the public health guidelines. I know we are all tired of this but our case numbers need to go down.

Update on new COVID-19 cases Ontario 805, York Region 93, Georgina 0. We have 1 active case and the outbreak at Cedarvale which remains at 1 health care worker. Yesterday’s Provincial announcement about York Region moving to a modified Stage 2 has brought many concerns from residents and our local business community, in particular restaurants and fitness centres. The question from many is why when our cases are low here are we being treated like other areas in York R...egion that have much higher numbers. That concern was brought forward by myself and other local mayors during discussions with our local Medical Officer of Health. The direction by the Province was to treat all areas in our region the same, some may not like it or feel that is the way it should be handled but that is their decision. Travel for work, business, shopping or social purposes happens daily by people living in Georgina to other parts of York Region and the GTA and from those living in areas outside of Georgina to come to Georgina for those same purposes. Throughout the pandemic the decisions that have been made Provincially, Regionally and locally have often received mixed reactions. Some have felt more restrictions should have been kept, others felt we opened up too soon or other felt we reopened too slow. There have been no easy decisions throughout the past 7 months. Staying in stage 3 with other parts of the region moving back to the modified Stage 2 would have made some people happy and others concerned we could become a destination for those other areas. No easy answers, no easy decisions. No crystal ball to see what would have happened with different decisions in the past or to see what the future brings. Our focus in Georgina remains the health and safety of our residents. As a community we have worked hard to keep our numbers low. I ask that we continue to work together thru this latest set of restrictions and that we support our local business community as much as each of us can. See more

Shopping local is important at any time but even more so in these very unusual and trying times for our local small business. Take some time this weekend to drop into a local business, check out their store, purchase something if you are able to. Let's all work together.

Update on new COVID-19 cases, Ontario 712, York Region 96 Georgina 1. We have one new active case and we wish him a speedy recovery. Today the Province moved York Region to a modified Stage 2 the same as Toronto, Peel and Ottawa. These changes will impact many of our small business owners negatively. Measures under this modified Stage 2 include: Reducing limits for all social gatherings and organized public events to a maximum of 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoor...s where physical distancing can be maintained. The two limits may not be combined for an indoor-outdoor event; Prohibiting indoor food and drink service in restaurants, bars and other food and drink establishments, including nightclubs and food court areas in malls; Closing of: Indoor gyms and fitness centres (i.e., exercise classes and weight and exercise rooms); Casinos, bingo halls and other gaming establishments; Indoor cinemas, performing arts centres and venues, (except for rehearsing or performing a recorded or broadcasted performance subject to conditions, including no spectators) Spectator areas in racing venues; Interactive exhibits or exhibits with high risk of personal contact in museums, galleries, zoos, science centres, landmarks, etc.; Prohibiting personal care services where face coverings must be removed for the service (e.g. makeup application, beard trimming); Prohibiting real estate open houses (permitting in-person showing by appointments only) Reducing the capacity limits for: Tour and guide services to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors In-person teaching and instruction (e.g. cooking class) to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors, with certain exemptions, including for schools, universities, colleges of applied arts and technology, private career colleges, the Ontario Police College, etc. Meeting and event spaces to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors with limited exemptions, including for government operations and the delivery of government services; and Limiting team sports to training sessions (no games or scrimmages). I know these changes are frustrating, disruptive and impact many people financially. The province has announced new funding assistance for businesses affected but more will need to come. Please continue to support our local business community wherever and however you can. Let's work together to move back into stage 3 and thru this second wave.
