This is my cadet story Chief Petty Officer Cadet First Class Joesph Hunter Aged out Dec 16, 2020 Within the cadet program, I am Chief Petty Officer First Cla...ss Hunter of RCSCC #60 Swiftsure. This is my 7th year as a cadet and I currently hold the position of Coxswain within the corp. I joined cadets on my 12th birthday and have been having a great time ever since gaining new skills, discovering new experiences and making friends that will last me a lifetime. Cadets, has opened up so many opportunities to me from varied training exercises, volunteering and community involvement, to leadership and travel. It has given me the confidence to stand up in front of the corp as coxswain to give directions, public speak and to teach and impart my knowledge to other cadets. Not only has this has been learned at corp level but also by attending numerous exercises and activities with other corps, such as SIDC, Chilly Willy, Iron Stag, Music Concentration, deployments, sail weekends and regattas. My corp has a strong connection with the local community and over my years with 60 Swiftsure I have participated in numerous community events and activities. Every year I have volunteered with the Rotary Club assisting at the Manitoba Royal Winter Fair Information Booth; manning the Child Find Booth at the Manitoba Summer Fair; volunteering at coat checks; clearing tables at Rib Fest. Every fall I have helped with canvassing for Diabetes Canada in the surrounding neighborhood. I regularly attend activities at local personal care homes where we interact with residents by playing games, dancing and visiting. For the past 2 years I was responsible for organizing cadet participation at my school’s Remembrance Day Service which involves coordinating cadets from all 3 elements and ensuring that everyone is well turned out and has the necessary information and equipment. I always participate with the annual Poppy Tag Day to support our veterans and I assist with fundraisers associated with our Navy League Branch. Initially when I joined cadets I became a member of the band and started playing the bells and then progressed onto the snare drum. I have participated in several Music Concentration events. As well as playing on parade nights I have also performed in drumline demonstrations at ACR, led the Souris Legion Branch Remembrance Day Parade for the past 6 years, play at the annual Battle of the Atlantic Parade and have played in small town summer parades. Before Sea Cadets I had never been in a sail boat but now sailing has become one of my passions. As well as participating in corp sail weekends I did my basic sail course in Kingston and then the following summer I did my intermediate sail course at Quadra. I have also represented my corp at regional regattas. I had the chance to participate on a domestic tall ship deployment out of Victoria BC on Pacific Swift and during the summer of 2019 I was selected to deploy for 4 weeks as a staff cadet on board HMCS Oriel for the Great Lakes Tallship Festival. This was a great opportunity to sail on the oldest ship in the Canadian Fleet with Reg Force crew members, which taught me so much and also allowed me to mentor and teach younger cadets. On another occasion I took part in a seamanship deployment on an Orca Class Patrol Vessel for a week off the coast of Victoria. Here I learnt about naval life on board ship, navigation, seamanship and man overboard drills. During the summer of 2018, I was selected to participate in an International Cadet Exchange to Hong Kong. This was an amazing chance to experience a distinct culture and to participate in diverse activities in a totally different environment. I made new friends and have memories to last a lifetime! With my corp I have been able to travel on trips to both the east and west coast where we had unique opportunities to tour naval vessels, try out firefighting and flooding at damage control school, participate in a Battle of Atlantic Day Remembrance Service out at sea onboard HMCS Halifax as well as visiting many other landmarks and places of interest. Teamwork, leadership, communication, responsibility, commitment and respect go hand in hand, and have played a huge part in my time in cadets and much of what I have learnt will be a huge asset to me in later life and will have a great effect on my future. In our continuing profile of Hubbell Award Winners... My name is Anetta Los and I was honored to receive the Hubbell award in 2016, while nearing the end of my ...time at RCSCC John Travers Cornwell VC. Since then, I have been studying at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Engineering, working towards my major in Civil Engineering with a focus on Water Resources. I still love to sail, and try to work with the cadets as often as I can, coming back to help out during sail weekends at the Lake Winnipeg Cadet Nautical Site in Gimli, MB. Since leaving the cadet program, I have been lucky enough to apply my leadership and strong work ethic to three major infrastructure projects including a Transmission Line in Northern Manitoba, a Dam in Calgary, and a Retention Structure in Canmore AB, which I'm currently working on now. I used my Hubbell Scholarship to pay my first laptop which has helped me be successful in university and even today. Cadets helped me find the courage to try new things and the independence to move away from home to work on exciting projects. I am very grateful to be among such incredible members of the cadet community, and I can't wait to see what the future award winners accomplish. Thanks Annetta. We are so happy the Scholarship helped you on your journey!

On Dec 15, 2020, at 5:37 pm PST, the active search for Master Sailor Duane Earle, a boatswain aboard HMCS Winnipeg, has concluded. Sadly, he was not found. The ...ship’s crew now begins their journey home and our hearts remain with his loved ones. News Release The search for missing sailor from HMCS Winnipeg has concluded December 15, 2020 Esquimalt, B.C. National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces The active search for Master Sailor Duane Earle, deployed in Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Winnipeg, has concluded at 5:37 pm Pacific Standard Time (8:37 pm Eastern Standard Time). Sadly, he has not been found. Master Sailor Earle’s next of kin have been notified and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are providing his family with the support needed to help them through this difficult time. His family is currently in their grieving process as a result of this tragic loss. Therefore, they are asking the media to respect their privacy during this very difficult time. Now that the search has concluded, HMCS Winnipeg will continue their transit home to Esquimalt, B.C. Details of their arrival will be communicated in the near future. As mentioned previously, the CAF will conduct an investigation into the circumstances of how MS Earle went missing. More details on the investigation will be made available in the coming weeks. Quotes It is with a heavy heart that we announce that we have concluded our active search for Master Sailor Earle. This decision was not taken lightly, however after extensive coverage of the search area we have not been able to locate him. I would also like to thank our allies who were involved in the search for Master Sailor Earle. They have been steadfast in their support to HMCS Winnipeg. Right now our focus remains on supporting his family, his friends and shipmates as they work through this very challenging time and I offer my deepest sympathies. Rear-Admiral Brian Santarpia, Maritime Component Commander This is an unimaginably difficult time for the family and the crew. With the conclusion of the active search, we are focused on supporting Master Sailor Earle’s family and friends while also working to bring HMCS Winnipeg the rest of the way home after a long and very demanding deployment. The entire Pacific Fleet, the whole of the Royal Canadian Navy and the CAF, stand beside them and will continue to support them in the coming days. Commodore Angus Topshee, Commander Canadian Fleet Pacific These have been an extremely difficult couple of days for the ship’s company. We have completed a challenging deployment, in very uncertain times both at home and overseas, and we will continue to stand together through this incredibly sad time. I would like to offer my sympathies to the family and friends of Master Sailor Earle. He will be sorely missed. Commander Mike Stefanson, Commanding Officer HMCS Winnipeg Quick Facts On December 14, 2020, Master Sailor Earle, a 47-year old Boatswain, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, was reported missing while the ship was approximately 500 nautical miles west of San Francisco, California, en route back to Esquimalt after being deployed to the Asia-Pacific region on Operations PROJECTION and NEON. An extensive search of an area approximately 2,000 nautical miles took place over the past 30 hours from both the air and sea. The search effort was coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Alameda County, California, and included the ship’s embarked Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CH-148 Cyclone helicopter; an RCAF CP-140 Aurora from 19 Wing, Comox, B.C.; a US Coast Guard C-27J search and rescue aircraft; a California Air National Guard C-130 Hercules aircraft; and HMCS Winnipeg. From September to December 2020, HMCS Winnipeg was deployed in the Asia-Pacific region on Operation PROJECTION Asia-Pacific and Operation NEON, to further strengthen Canada’s relations with partners in the area. During these operations, the CAF conduct training, exercises, and engagements with foreign navies and other international security partners. HMCS Winnipeg has approximately 230 highly trained and professional officers and sailors who were well-prepared to meet the challenges of their deployment on Operations PROJECTION and NEON. HMCS Winnipeg delivered robust capabilities working with our partner navies to strengthen international partnerships and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. - 30 - Social Media @CAFOperations @OperationsFC Contacts Media Relations Department of National Defence Email: [email protected] Le 15 déc, à 5 h 37 PST, la portion active des efforts de recherches pour matc Duane Earle, manœuvrier à bord du NCSM Winnipeg, a pris fin. In September 2020, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Child Welfare League of Canada, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, Duke... of Edinburgh’s Award, Experiences Canada, Girl Guides, JA Canada, Navy League of Canada, Pathways to Education, Students Commission of Canada , United Nations Association in Canada, and the YMCA Canada (members of the National Youth Serving Agencies, NYSA), commissioned Abacus Data to conduct a nationally representative survey with 1,000 Canadian youth aged 15 to 30. We sought to understand the impacts and perspectives of the pandemic thus far for youth in Canada and explore their ideas for recovery. As youth continue to navigate through this world disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, it will be important to provide them with opportunities to re-engage with employment, education and social connections. Young people are aware of the challenges ahead and want to be an active part of solutions. They need more tools and supports, and opportunities to connect with each other to strengthen their efforts. A large majority of young people (85%) believe youth serving agencies have a role in helping them achieve this. The Navy League of Canada supports almost 10,000 youth in 300 communities across Canada by offering youth programming at low or no cost. These programs connect youth to their communities, and teach them valuable life skills that prepare them for their futures including teamwork, communication, collaboration, problem-solving and creative thinking. Together, we can make sure Canada's youth will #BounceBackBetter Find out more at COVID-19 & Canadian Youth: Impacts, Perspectives & the Recovery https://abacusdata.ca//11/NYS-Youth-Survey-Final-Report.pdf presents the full findings of the survey.

The League’s independent not-for-profit corporation status allows them flexibility to engage with private industry, non-government organizations and provincial,... territorial and municipal governments. This benefits corps and squadrons with additional resources, help in securing facilities, and other items not provided by the CAF. Corps and Squadrons will also benefit from increased visibility in their communities. Commanding Officers and their local League representatives can identify opportunities together, to best support the corps and squadrons and most importantly the Cadets. It is through this shared responsibility that we strengthen our profile and garner community support. The Navy League of Canada, the Army Cadet League of Canada and the Air Cadet League of Canada are national federally incorporated not-for-profit organizations willing to support Cadets and Cadet Corps and Squadrons in specific key areas, as requested by the CAF. For many decades, the CAF has benefitted from the support of the Cadet Leagues. The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to formalize the shared roles and responsibilities of the CAF and the Cadet Leagues, in support of Cadets, Corps, and Squadrons, and the consultative arrangements for executing those roles and responsibilities C’est le statut d'organisation à but non lucratif indépendante qui permet aux Ligues de s'engager avec le secteur privé, les organisations non gouvernementales et les gouvernements provinciaux, territoriaux et municipaux. The Navy League of Canada 25.06.2020

Dear friends and colleagues, The last few months have been difficult for everyone adjusting to the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic across Canada. Provinc...es are easing restrictions on a regional basis and the reopening of local businesses and modifications of social-distancing guidelines shows how hard all Canadians have been working to maintain our communities safe. Canadian health experts have noted that COVID-19 may have second or third waves across Canada as businesses reopen, school resumes, and the public engages in more activities. It is for this reason that all in-person activities for Sea and Navy League Cadets (including fundraising) will be postponed until at least 1 October 2020. That being said, the resumption of in-person training will be solely dependent on any individual corps’ ability to carry out their role safely again once public health officials give the right of way. Navy League Corps are required to develop in-person safety plans in accordance with their local health authorities and Navy League restrictions, which may include submitting a detailed plan based on the National COVID-19 Policies and Procedures document. These plans must be sent to their Divisions for review and final approval prior to any in-person activities taking place as the health and safety of all of our members, volunteers, and cadets remains our top priority. Virtual engagement activities will be a top priority in the meantime to keep Cadets busy and involved in our programs while rigorous preparations for safe in-person activities are underway. This training year will be unlike anything we have seen before. It will challenge us to think creatively, and our national Navy League Cadet teams have been working hard to introduce new learning opportunities to engage our cadets in a virtual space. We strongly encourage our members to reach out to their Divisional Commander to learn about these tools and implement them to provide valuable learning experiences for our Navy League Cadets. Should you wish to participate in fundraising activities, you must do so in accordance with your local health officials and correspond with your Divisions for tracking and approval prior to executing the activity. Initiatives will continue to be reviewed on a case by case basis for approval to ensure that our cadets and members are not put in harm’s way and the Navy League of Canada does not become a vector for the spread of COVID-19. Over the last few weeks we have received requests for fundraising initiatives, which we have reviewed on a case-by-case basis for approval. We have been pleasantly surprised to see that many of you are taking up the task to get creative and continue to serve your communities while maintaining the health and safety of our members top of mind. As a national organization with extensive group programming across the country, the Navy League of Canada holds the health and safety of the cadets, members, volunteers, and their families in our highest priority. To this end, we encourage our members to remain vigilant and follow the recommendations set by their local health authorities to the best of their abilities. In addition to this, we are aware that the pandemic is a fluid situation, which means that subsequent direction will be sent out as soon as new information is received. We hope that you all remain safe, healthy and happy as we all move through this period of transition. The Navy League of Canada looks forward to seeing you all again as soon as we are able to.

MENTAL WELLNESS MONDAY DID YOU KNOW? The amount of time that you spend on social media can negatively effect your mental health. Although social media has m...any beneficial uses, multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media use and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness. I just graduated from Cro...cus Plains Regional Secondary School. I'm taking a year off to get work experience in the theatre and live event industry, before going to a Lighting Production School. Cadets has given me once in a life time opportunities such as international exchange to Hong Kong, sailing aboard the HMCS Oriole / NCSM Oriole, and many more. Cadets has also taught me many life skills such as public speaking, sailing, leadership, and problem solving. I enjoy taking a active role within my corps and inspiring the younger cadets to reach their full potential." Do you want to be featured on Tribute Tuesday? The Navy League of Canada 25.05.2019

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. Please take a moment today to remember those lost at sea. The Battle of the Atlantic was the lon...gest battle of the Second World War. The outcome of the war heavily depended on it. The Allied forces suffered a total loss of 36,200 sailors, 36,000 merchant sailors, 3500 merchant ships, 175 warships, and 741 RAF Costal Command Aircraft.

The Navy League of Canada 23.05.2019

While we mourn our fallen today, we commemorate and honour a legacy of service, sacrifice and heroism as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the B...attle of the Atlantic. The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest battle of the Second World War and was fought at sea from 1939 to 1945. Much of the burden of fighting the battle fell to the RCN which, at the outbreak of the war, was comprised of only six destroyers and a handful of smaller vessels. Over the course of 2,075 days Allied naval and air forces fought more than 100 convoy battles and performed as many as 1,000 single ship actions against submarines and warships of the German and Italian navies. Primary targets for the Germans and Italians were the convoys of merchant ships carrying vital, life-sustaining cargo from North America to Europe. Canada’s navy was instrumental in turning the tide of the war, and by the conflict’s conclusion had grown to become one of the largest in the world. The RCN destroyed or shared in the destruction of 33 U-Boats and 42 enemy surface craft. In turn, it suffered 2,210 fatalities, including nine women, and lost 33 vessels. Today, our sailors continue to proudly represent Canadians at home and on the world stage. The Royal Canadian Navy has become the country’s force of first resort in response to world crises. As a result of its performance during the Battle of the Atlantic, the RCN has been deployed into harm’s way as a vanguard Canadian military response since 1945. It was deployed in the Korean War, the Suez crisis, the Cuban missile crisis, the First Gulf War, following the events of 9/11, the humanitarian relief effort following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in response to the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti. We honour our past by remembering the tremendous efforts Canadian sailors made in fulfilling their commitment to secure Allied victory, and we salute the RCN’s resolute path forward in remaining committed to the safety, security and defence of Canada at home and abroad. #Batatl75 #LeCanadasesouvient #Lamrcsesouvient #BatailledelAtlantique

The Navy League of Canada 26.04.2019

On May 3rd, 2020 Canada will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of action in the Battle of the Atlantic. This significant milestone provides Canadians ...and the world an opportunity to commemorate our navy’s proud past while celebrating its bright future. Canada’s proud naval and maritime history could not be better represented than by the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN’s) success in the Battle of the Atlantic. For this reason, the annual celebration of naval and maritime service takes its name. Of course, the annual Battle of the Atlantic celebrations are far broader in scope, inclusive of the great people-delivered successes that populate our now 109-year (110 years in 2020) RCN history. The Battle of the Atlantic -- the longest continuous battle of the Second World War -- raged from 1939 to 1945 and was and one in which Canada played a central role. During those 2,075 days, over 70,000 Allied sailors, merchant mariners, and airmen lost their lives, including 4,600 Canadians.

The Navy League of Canada 04.04.2019

Every year, on the first Sunday in May, we remember the end of the Battle of the Atlantic. We will remember and honour all of those that served in the Royal Canadian Navy to protect our sovereignty and the delivery of much needed food and supplies to our Allies across the Atlantic Ocean. We will remember and honour all those that served in the Merchant Marine that risked their lives to transport the much needed food and supplies across the ocean. Many lost there lives at sea.... Many ships were lost. Too many. We will remember all of them. This Sunday, May 3rd, 2020, marks the 75th anniversary of the end of The Battle of the Atlantic.

The Quadra Education Foundation (QEF) is pleased to launch a new scholarship this year to support more staff cadets pursuing post-secondary education. It is nam...ed in memory of Chief Petty Officer First Class Keith Hunter (1933 - 2019) who served as Staff Cadet Training Officer at HMCS QUADRA from 1989 to 1995, following a 38-year career in the Royal Canadian Navy. This scholarship will be awarded annually with preference given to a serving HMCS QUADRA staff cadet in the most recent summer training year. For this year, any cadet who served at QUADRA in a previous summer and who was selected to return as a staff cadet in 2020 will be eligible for this award. With the cancellation of training at QUADRA this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff cadets and officers are losing a critical source of income to fund their post-secondary studies. To make the Hunter Scholarship possible, we need your help. We are asking all HMCS QUADRA alumni and supporters to make a donation of any amount. Your gift will not only go directly to help a cadet in need, it will be matched through the generosity of an anonymous donor up to a certain amount. If you give to The Quadra Education Foundation between now and May 5, your donation will be counted towards #GivingTuesdayNow, a global effort to raise funds and awareness of charities during the pandemic crisis. To donate, please visit our Donations page at www.quadraeducationfoundation.com. We also encourage you to share your story of giving back to QUADRA whether on social media by using the hashtags #GivingTuesdayNow #HMCSQUADRA in your posts. So please give generously, give what you can. Help support the next generation of leaders especially during this challenging time. In the meantime, stay healthy and stay safe friends!
