Working on a device changeout today, we found these extremely brittle, undersized wires attached directly to the receptacle at 120 volts/ 15 amp circuit! This was an obvious fire hazard and has been corrected. Do you know whats lurking behind your walls? Contact My Better Home today to schedule your comprehensive electrical home inspection!

IS THIS TYPE OF WIRE A PROBLEM? Many older types of wiring come into question as to whether or not their use can be continued due to technical or code related issues. Today, we hope to clear some of this up! The picture is showing armoured cable which is used in exposed, dry locations where mechanical protection (protection against damage) is required. This particular wire was used to feed a furnace. ... The conductors are copper with a tin coating on the outside. There is a flat aluminum tape that runs in the inside of the armour. This aluminum tape is meant to give continuous contact with the armour to help bond the armour to the box when pressed under the connector. This type of installation is different than newer, romex type wiring which uses a bare copper wire to bond the box by connecting the bare copper under a screw in the back of the box. While both methods are effective for their use (installation location, means of protection, etc), the reason this armoured cable was removed was due to its use with a newer high efficiency furnace. Newer furnaces use a process called flame rectification to ensure safety for the burner and the release of gas from the gas valve. Essentially, flame rectification relies on a solid bond to ground to send a very small amperage signal to the control board. If the bond to ground is weak, the signal can be interrupted causing the furnace to shut down. The twisted metal casing of the armoured cable, even with the aluminum tape, can often exhibit contact problems resulting in furnace trouble. Whenever this type of cable is discovered, it is replaced with a cable that incorporates a solid copper bonding conductor to ensure the highest quality bond connection. Identifying the type of wire used for your newer high efficiency furnace is just another way you can work at making your home Better!

Bootleg grounding is actually a thing (dangerous and improper)...but this wasnt even a proper bootleg! The danger here, is that if the neutral (white wire) going back to the panel ever became disconnected or broken, the box, the device yoke and even the little screws that hold the cover plate on, would become live with 120 volts!! We certainly fixed this mistake and checked to make sure there werent any more!
