If you’ve watched a Manitoba Underground Opera production, you’ll know we aren’t just about traditional opera and big ball gowns (although we do love a good gown when the opera suits ). We are committed to producing opera that speaks to modern-day experiences in innovative, impacting ways. Using unconventional venues around Manitoba, we love finding ways to bridge the gap between opera’s most compelling stories and how we understand them, today. We’re thrilled that this year..., our focus is on new opera being composed, written and eventually premiering right here in Manitoba! This is the final week to have your donation matched to create a ‘minute of music’ for The Mansplaining Division, a new original opera. Click the link below to donate and thank you for your support! https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/38253 . . . .

The Mansplaining Division isn’t the first opera we’ve featured with an epic journey to the Underworld! In 2016, Manitoba Underground Opera put on the frothy, can-canning Orpheus and the Underworld. In this photo, you’ll see a full line up of gods and goddesses ready to shine, including the ruler of the Underworld himself, Hades, on the far right. Have you heard? MUO is commissioning a brand new opera right here in Manitoba! And it’s not your typical opera... Called The Mansplaining Division, this show combines opera, ancient Greek mythology and 21st century comedy to skewer modern day sexism. We could not be more excited to have composer Laura Gow and writer Karen Remoto hard at work creating this unique show, but they can’t do it alone! That’s why we’re asking for your help to create this timely new opera. Watch Arti...stic Director Brenna Corner’s announcement of this exciting new project and please consider donating to support The Mansplaining Division! We’re making today Collaborative Pianist Day Whether you are preparing for a live-streamed university recital or recording a special studio concert for your friends and family, give some extra applause for the pianists who always have your back (even if you enter a little early). Just make sure you do it from a safe distance, unlike a certain Billy Goat in the picture ... Pictured: Megan Dufrat and John Anderson in The Billy Goats Gruff Paul Mckeen . . . .

We were thrilled to be included in this inspiring article by Michael Zarathus-Cook and CBC Music last week. Give it a read to learn about how independent opera companies all over Canada are embracing the art form in transformative ways, including us here at MUO!

MUO wants to recognize all those who have suffered and continue to suffer as a result of wars around the world. Here in Canada, there are so many rights and privileges that many of us take for granted: our right to vote, our right to marry the person we love, our right to cultural and religious freedom, and countless more. Today we express gratitude for the sacrifices our forebears made for us, while acknowledging that these fundamental freedoms are not yet equally available to everyone in Canada and around the world. To us, Remembrance Day is about commemorating all victims of war, and honouring their memory by promoting the rights of all people both at home and abroad.

MUO is thrilled to participate in #worldoperaday! Opera tells human stories in a heightened way, and can help us to grapple with the issues we are facing as a society. MUO believes that opera is for everyone, and we're working to make that a reality by creating work that is accessible and that reflects our community. Through our unique productions that tackle important social issues, our Opera for Children tour, free performances around the city, and more, we are working to c...reate #thefuturewewant.
