Christmas is coming up fast, and something fun to pass the evenings is to shoot Christmas lights! And it may be cold, but at least we're not as cold as our friends at the Red Deer store! We've got a few tips to help out with this type of photography: 1. Using a longer lens (first photo) will help compress the photo and give the feeling of more lights in the scene, however, don't discredit the look of wide angles (2nd image) to really insert yourself into the scene. 2. When fo...cusing on a particular subject, dirty the frame with lights in the foreground to give that dreamy, bubbly look with your bokeh 3. Use a tripod and set your aperture higher to make sure everything is sharp within the scene, but keep you ISO low and adjust your shutter speed as needed. With a longer exposure, light trails from traffic and movement can only add to the light within the scene! 4. Contrary to our last tip, if you're shooting handheld, open up the lens all the way to let maximum light in. You should try to find a single subject to focus on if you are using this technique as you depth of field will be quite thin. 5. Lastly, look for something unique within the scene to focus on. You don't always have to try to get everything in the photo, but instead focus on one piece that grabs you attention, and show it within a grouping of photos to give a sense of atmosphere of the area. Get out there and have fun! Be creative with those shots

Looking for that perfect portrait lighting this holiday season without going overboard on your gear? Here's a quick 1-light setup rundown that will work for small groups and individuals: We're using the Godox V1 because of it's ability to accept accessories, but any speedlight will work for this. To diffuse the light coming out from the flash we have a honeycomb grid and a dome diffuser, however, a speedlight softbox would work equally as well, and will work on a wider variet...y of lights. Then we need a trigger to set off the flash - in this case, the X-Pro transmitter. The distance you setup your flash from the subject will vary depending on how much area you are trying to cover, with only one subject, we set it at about 3 meters. We are using natural light coming in through the windows to balance out the flash and act as a fill for the other side, and the ceiling lights are our backlight/background fill. (Your flash should moderately overpower these). From here, you will adjust the power of the flash until it reaches a level you are happy with. And that's it! A very simple setup to improve your portraits over the holidays!
