This week, The Sudbury Star provided an example of the institutional and underlying racism that exists across Canada. The Star has since apologized for their initial headline, which revictimized and criminalized an individual who was murdered in Greater Sudbury last week. They have rewritten the original story, and released a subsequent article about the life of Deion Moses Faries, 25, who left behind a partner, two children, and eight siblings. The Sudbury Star, despite th...ose efforts, somehow still included a photo of the Sudbury Court House in their revised article. Instead of fully addressing the issue of criminalizing Deion Faries, they appear to have simply driven the problem further beneath the surface. Racism in Canada is often subtle, pervasive, and subconscious. Whether it is in the response of the media, the government, our neighbours, service providers, or the police/RCMP (as we have recently seen facing Mi'kmaq fishery on the East Coast), we need to identify and call-out these racist tendencies, so that we may recognize and eliminate them.

Fun fact: at 3228 square kilometres, Greater Sudbury is bigger than the world’s 29 smallest countries (30 I believe if you count Hong Kong).

I would love to see private developers breathe new life into the iconic Ledo Hotel.
