Love an upcycled vintage item? But did you know there are even more reasons to love your next thrift shop find? The proceeds MCC thrift shops go to help people like Augustine Bidali in Uganda. Augustine Bidali is a refugee from South Sudan now living in the Imvepi settlement area in northwestern Uganda with his three brothers. He uses his training in tailoring to support the family. ... Augustine successfully completed a tailoring course supported by MCC through partner RICE-WN which earned him a startup kit that included a sewing machine. As a bread winner for the family, having been separated from their parents during the wars in South Sudan, Augustine says this makes a big difference and especially now that World Food Programme (WFP) reduced food rations by almost half. With your thrift shop find, you are helping to make a difference. Thank you!
Take a look at these 3 thrifting tips! Make sure to save this post for later.

Our entire planet is covered with beautiful oceans and many fabrics do not decompose in water. These textiles and fabrics will stay intact damaging, hurting or even killing the natural wildlife from the Pacific to the Mediterranean. Producing clothing can require multiple gallons of water, even for a single t-shirt. By thrifting, we reduce demand for new clothing and preserve the quality of our oceans and water! #MCCThrift #MCCThriftStore #Secondhand #Thrift #Thrifting #ThriftStoreFinds #ThriftedFashion #Repurposed #MCC #ThriftStores #ThriftStore #Thrifting #Sustainable #Sustainability #Conservewater #Planet

We love when you think of us when you’re purging. And we love helping divert waste from the landfill. Unfortunately though, there are some things we can’t take. If you’re wondering whether the stuff on your to purge pile is something we would take, check social media/website posts from your local shop or call them to ask about a specific item. One persons trash is only another persons treasure to an extent ... * Due to quickly changing provincial/regional pandemic restrictions it is always best to contact your local MCC Thrift shop for the most up-to-date information regarding shopping and donation hours.
Thank you for keeping the flow of donations and sales going these days If you were to travel from shop to shop (if only, eh?) and take a look at the behind-the-scenes activities happening you would find volunteers sorting donations, cleaning, re-stocking shelves, taking photos of current items to post online, filling online orders, and in some locations even doing personal shopping for you. * Due to quickly changing provincial/regional pandemic restrictions it is always best to contact your local MCC Thrift shop for the most up-to-date information regarding shopping and donation hours.
National Volunteer Week may be over, but our gratitude remains steadfast. Thank you for being part of the Mennonite Central Committee - MCC story through MCC Thrift. ________... In addition, thank you to everyone who helped get our volunteer appreciation note out to the MCC Thrift volunteers in your life. If the volunteer you nominated in the comments of the post below is not on Facebook and missed our reply, please pass our thank you response along to them. We want them know how much we appreciate the hours they've put in. WINNERS OF THE $25 MCC THRIFT GIFT CARDS: Kathy Bergen Wiebe and Doreen Wiebe
"MCC is extremely thankful for every MCC Thrift Volunteer. The skills, time and dedication of volunteers is illustrated each time a shop sends a financial gift ...to MCC. It takes many hands to make a thrift shop work hands that clean and price items, display merchandise on the sales floor, greet customers to complete sales, and meet as board members to carry out governance and legal duties. Each volunteer is special and MCC appreciates these volunteers every single day!" - Sarah Fleming, MCC Central States Thrift Shop Coordinator Moreover, despite all the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, MCC Thrift Shop management and staff have really worked hard to maintain a sense of community with volunteers and customers. We continue to value this this commitment and are forever grateful. Thank you. #mccpeace #mccThrift #mccThriftShop #VolunteerAppreciationWeek

Ever stop to think about rather than being reused for craft + sewing projects? Unfortunately, we don't know how many actually end up in the landfill every year (would be an interesting stat if anyone finds info on that), but there's one thing we do know... THOUSANDS (maybe even millions!?) of buttons are diverted from the landfill through MCC Thrift shops every year, landing in the hands of creative people like you

Clothing production accounts for approx. 10% of global carbon emissions. As the climate crisis continues, it's critical for us to keep all clothing that's already been produced in circulation as long as possible. And of course, we need to avoid purchasing new clothing whenever we can. MCC Thrift Shops are going to extra mile to ensure that textiles stay out of the landfill and get into your hands. Shops are finding creative ways to do this through programs like "buy by the po...und" or finding volunteers to sew old textiles to into reusable produce bags, paper towels, or quilts. #SecondHand #ClimateAction

Don't let cool weather keep you from getting outside A few tips if you're purchasing winter clothing secondhand... Don't forget about layering! A warm sweater under a rain jacket can be just as warm as a winter jacket.... Sometimes a medium in one brand fits like a large in another - don't be attached to the size you see on the label. Pay attention to the material different items are made of. Materials wash differently, wear differently, and are different levels of water proof. #MCCThrift #SupportLocal #Thrift #SustainableShopping #SecondHand #MCCPeace #MyMCCThriftFind
When a disaster strikes, you are there. Thank you for responding to basic human needs through volunteering, shopping and donating at MCC Thrift.
Even if you’re only dressing up at home this year, there’s still time to make a costume. Use these punny ideas if you’re short on time. Or check out your local MCC Thrift shop for more inspiration. Graduation cap + cookie = smart cookie Dressy clothes + sign with "sorry" = a formal apology... A disguise + sign with "bless you" = a blessing in disguise A piece of bread + medals = breadwinner Butterfly wings + social media icons = social butterfly Do you have an idea? Let us know in the comments! (Photo was taken in 2018.)
You're amazing. Every time you shop, donate and volunteer at MCC Thrift, you are supporting people in your neighbourhood and around the globe. These are just a few of the ways you are making a difference.

You never know who you'll meet while volunteering at an MCC Thrift Shop. Like Polly the six-toed cat! She's a pawsome volunteer who does a purrfect job at MCC Thrift in Winnipeg.
By shopping at MCC Thrift, you are providing safe, clean water to people living in a refugee camp in Chad. That water is crucial for proper handwashing, helping people stay healthy. Today, on #GlobalHandwashingDay, we want to thank you for supporting MCC's projects by shopping at MCC Thrift. We couldn't do this without you.
These cute pumpkins are made from old sweaters. It's a great way to save a shirt with a few too many holes from the landfill and decorate for fall at the same time. Win-win! (Though if your clothes are in great condition, we'd suggest donating them at your nearest MCC Thrift shop instead. Just saying.)
Thank you, teachers, for inspiring, encouraging and enlightening the next generation. #NationalTeachersDay When you shop for things like backpacks and school supplies at MCC Thrift, you are supporting teachers and students in places like Cambodia through MCC's projects.
When you donate housewares like plates and cups, you're also providing communities with water to grow their own food through MCC's projects. Thank you for supporting people here and around the world.
Thrift tip: Home decor doesn't have to be your favourite colour. When you're shopping for thrifted vases, look for sizes and shapes you like. It's easy to give them a new look with a fresh coat of paint that matches the rest of your decor. #MCCThrift #ThriftTip
