For this week’s #FolkloreThursday on the theme of the underworld: Dante blended Classical and Christian belief to create his vision of the underworld. Here Virgil and Dante fill the mouths of Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog, with the mud of the underworld in order to pass by. Rare mid-19th century French transformation cards. This is the historic Jeanne L'Hachette deck, designed by Max Frommann, and published in Paris, France, c.1860. Printed on delicate 19th century paper, these cards are beautifully embellished, with standing court figures and detailed caricatures and scenes on each of the suit cards. Typical French styled suits: diamonds, clubs, spades & hearts; A-10, with a Jack, Queen, & King in each of the four suit series. Square cornered c...ards, with single black-line borders. Reverses with a pattern of hexagrams.
