A Call to Action: Insurance lobbyists closely connected to Premier Jason Kenney are urging our UCP government to rip rights away from ordinary Albertans to help pad insurance industry profit margins -- and apparently Finance Minister Travis Toews finds this inane idea so darned compelling, he’s thinking of doing just that in 2021. If, in stark contrast, you think the Finance Minister’s taxpayer-funded time would be better utilized working on reducing our all-time high public spending deficit instead of playing footsie with the auto insurance lobby, tell him ASAP (and tell your MLA while you’re at it). We did, and here’s our letter to Travis, cc’ed to Justice Minister Kaycee Madu as well as to UCP MLAs Mickey Amery, Jason Stephan, Peter Guthrie, Miranda Rosin and Matt Jones:
During the 2019 provincial election campaign, Jason Kenney called the NDP’s carbon tax the biggest lie in Alberta political history because Nötley Crüe hadn’t mentioned a carbon tax during the 2015 election campaign. Hey, does anyone recall which of the UCP’s 375 campaign platform planks last year promised to rip away rights from innocent injured Albertans to pad the profit margins of multinational, multibillion dollar insurance corporations? Not a single one of ‘em, and ye...t insurance lobbyists Nick Koolsbergen (2019 UCP Election Campaign Chair) and Celyeste Power (former Kenney press secretary) have hapless UCP TBF Minister Travis Toews removing the artificial cap on premiums while hypocritically expanding the unconservative cap on claims, and musing about turfing auto accident tort law altogether next year in favour of a socialist no-fault regime with a sham tort option. It’s time to tell Travis to stop it. #BigFatLiars #UCPBS #StopIt #SayNo2NoFault See more
Anyone who wants to see Travis Toews’ Tory tort deform blueprint need look no further than the Insurance Bureau of Canada's "Driving Change" document. Evidently the insurance lobby wrote last week’s Minor Injury Regulation amendment, as well as the euphemistically titled More Care, Less Court no-fault scheme that the TBF Minister (who fits neatly into IBC’s back pocket) likely has in store for Albertans next year.
Season’s Greetings, Travis Toews! In the over a year and a half that you’ve been TBF Minister, your adherence to insurance lobby talking points on this file has been unwavering. Enough already. Please give this a blog post a read instead, and resolve to strive for a FAIR Alberta in the new year. Thanks,... K. Mark McCourt Alberta Civil Trial Lawyer See more
