Lemur evolution is one of the most interesting evolutionary stories, IMO. Contrary to popular belief, they are not ancestors of modern day monkeys and apes. It was approximately 60million years ago that lemurs branched off and began their own evolutionary journey. It is not known for sure how they reached Madagascar, but it is believed that some maybe have floated over on some type of ‘raft’ or mass of vegetation and wood. Since then, they have evolved in to many niche subspe...cies living across to the island. Today, lemurs are restricted to only 10% of the island, due to deforestation and habitat loss. Most lemur species are now either endangered or critically endangered. What has taken tens of millions of years to evolve, has been almost wiped out in less than 60 years by humans.
