Humans of McGill PoliSci Spotlight: Introducing Garin Kassabian ! Garin is in her U3 year Majoring in Anthropology with a Minor in Political Science! 1. Where did your internship/research take place?... I interned in Washington D.C. for a grassroots ethnic lobbying organization called the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). 2. What did you learn from your experience? I learned something new every single day. The point of the internship was to introduce students to the behind-the-scenes politics that goes on at the Hill. Most of my time on the Hill was spent lobbying and having meetings with various Senators and Representatives, as well as their chiefs of staff, asking them to sign onto certain bills. The internship was also very educational; we had weekly lectures by Diplomats, Foreign Service Officers, and professors. Additionally, the organization very conveniently provided lodging for the interns. My favourite part was living and working with my cohort. The experience was unlike any other, as I got to meet so many outstanding individuals and made life-long friends. 3. How did you find this opportunity? A good friend of mine had done the same internship a couple of summers before I did, and they had a wonderful experience. Before applying, I decided to speak to them to receive additional information and advice about such internships and applying abroad. So, when the opportunity arose, I submitted an application along with a few recommendation letters, a cover letter, and my CV, did a virtual interview. It was all smooth sailing from there! 4. One piece of advice for other PoliSci students who want a similar internship experience? Don’t be afraid to over-apply to internships, and don’t be picky about what kind of work you would like to do. You’d be surprised by how much you would love something you never even thought about! So, apply anywhere and everywhere! Also, take the time to research what you would be doing, what they’re looking for, and tailor each cover letter based on the organization to which you are applying.

Each month the PSSA casts a spotlight on one of the professors in the Political Science department. This October, Professor Douek sat down with us to discuss his love of reggae and Lady Gaga, his personal "Origin Story", and his advice to undergrads on approaching PoliSci from a place of personal inspiration! Daniel L. Douek teaches Political Science at McGill University and Concordia University. His work has appeared in the Journal of Southern African Studies and Third World Quarterly. His upcoming book, Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in South Africa, will probe the underbelly of early post-apartheid South Africa and the destabilization and assassination campaign unleashed as white rule ended.
