Last night before the Board's decision, we held a rally outside the James Administration Building to celebrate all the hard, often invisible, and relentless wor...k that has been put towards this campaign over the past 7 years. We took this opportunity to launch our new website, reveal Divest McGill art panels, and screen the "Paid by McGill" video. We had incredible speakers from My Media Creative our website design committee, and Divest McGill, all sharing their experience working for this campaign. In the words of Tony, the writer and co-director of the Paid by McGill video: "it’s pretty easy to create art when you’re outraged. And I don’t know about you guys, but I’m mad as hell'. We are incredibly grateful for all the support from the McGill community: to the McGill Faculty and Librarians For Divestment (MFL4D), for pushing this cause beyond student organizing; to our incredible SSMU execs for their continuous, thorough and committed work; to friends at Climate Justice Action McGill - C-JAM and Greenpeace - Groupe local de l'Université McGill, for joining forces and organizing collectively; to My Media Creative, for amazing and engaged art; and to ECOLE, for providing a safe and welcoming space for our weekly meetings. Yesterday, McGill rejected fossil fuel divestment for the third time. The entire McGill community has clearly spoken, and we are disheartened to see that the handful of people on McGill’s Board get to overturn our demands in a rushed and illegitimate vote. McGill University, I hope you realize that this is your loss. You have chosen giant fossil fuel corporations over frontline communities, the scientific community, your students, and your faculty. Love and divest, see you all soon!
