This is the second lecture in the McGill School of Social Work's Transforming Social Work Speaker Series. This series stems from numerous calls to action within our profession and broader society. Recognition of social work’s colonial roots requires reflecting on our past and present to determine how as a profession we can move towards liberatory transformation.

Hi everyone! Just a friendly reminder to please fill out this very important survey by Feb 1st if you haven't already done so. We really need to gather as much information on this topic if we hope to effect change in our program. Speaking of changes: SWRK 342 (practice with "GLBT-S" people) is officially in the process of getting its name changed! This was a major impetus behind this survey and a key part in our campaign to make our program more inclusive. We are happy to s...hare this news with you know that we know it's for sure happening! Thank you all who provided feedback and support! https://forms.gle/6qwFJJvndCVYB6ERA

One of our community members died due to an oppressive and discriminatory curfew policy enacted by the Quebec government. In an attempt to protect himself and hide from the police, Raphael André, 51 years old, Innu man, was discovered just steps from a shelter. We are deeply saddened by his passing and outraged at the lack of empathy and consideration for our homeless community members from the Legault administration. The Premier’s words prove his blatant disrespect for the l...ives of those living on the street. As part of COVID-related regulations, the shelter that Mr. André frequented was ordered to close at 9:30pm when it was previously 24/7. When services some of our most vulnerable people rely on are no longer available to them, how are they meant to be safe? SWSA condemns the lack of action taken by city and provincial officials in the wake of this tragedy, and we urge community organizations, and all levels of government to take swift action to firstly denounce such discriminatory practices towards our homeless community members, and to ensure that there are appropriate services in place to support this population. Please check out these resources listed below of potential use to you and your clients. Let’s do the work to be part of a society that believes in dignity and worth of all our community members. One death is too many. Our condolences go out to all those that knew and loved Mr. André. Do feel that McGill’s BSW and MSW programs adequately address LGBTQ2SIA+ issues in course curricula? The answers to the below questions will help us gauge just that. Please complete this survey, and answer as honestly and respectfully as you can. All responses are anonymous. U1 student Miles Cooke has been working hard to develop this survey with the hopes of creating inclusive change in our course content. You can reach them at: [email protected] We aim to share the results of this survey with students and faculty to inform future discussions on mandating such important courses, so please complete it by Feb 7th. https://forms.gle/qUuGdUu583xPHFKv9

CALL FOR SPEAKERS Dear students and community members, Happy first week of the winter 2021 semester! SWSA began organizing webinars for the students at the School of Social Work that are also open to all. The objective of these webinars is to expand our professional competency and hear from experienced practitioners in the field. We’ve already had 3 webinars in our series. In the hopes of diversifying our guest speakers and touching on the array of roles that social workers ...are employed in, we are reaching out to the student body for your support! If you know anyone in the field of social work or an affiliated practice who may be interested in giving a one-hour virtual presentation to McGill students, please contact SWSA via FB or email ([email protected]). Ideally, the presenter will have experience speaking to a group, and can provide some resources to guide their talk (e.g. PowerPoint). They can be from your place of employment, stage, volunteeretc. It is important to note that this will be facilitated through zoom. Deadline for speakers is February 1st. See more
