Sometimes two very different exhibitions offer the opportunity to meditate on the same themes by coincidence of being just a few rooms apart. Take for example two views on natural resource extraction created almost 100 years apart: Franklin Carmichael's painting of Cobalt, ON from 1930, , a town that had more than 20 silver mines at the turn of the last century, and Christi Belcourt's protest banners with artist Isaac Murdoch that offer urgent calls ...to action to preserve and protect the land. See both works in adjoining galleries and tell us what you think. The McMichael is open Thursdays through Sunday from 10 to 5. On #remembranceday, we honour the men and women from all walks of life who fought and continue to fight with bravery and valour to defend the freedoms and privileges that we enjoy today. Today, we're sharing rarely seen WWI drawings by Group of Seven artist Arthur Lismer. Lismer was commissioned by the committee of the Canadian War Memorials Fund (CWMF) to document the war effort at the home front in Halifax in 1918, a strategic stronghold for the Allied Forces. In these two... drawings he captures both the stark loneliness of wartime, and the relief and joy of soldiers returning home to their loved ones. : Arthur Lismer (1885 - 1969), Home Again, 1918 - 1919, lithograph on papersheet, 63.4 x 48.2 cm; image: 39.5 x 34.6 cm, Purchase 1987, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, 1987.8.2 Arthur Lismer (1885 - 1969),The Sentinels, 1919, lithograph on papersheet, 60.4 x 45.1 cm; image: 39 x 31.7 cm, Purchase 1987, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, 1987.8.5
