Pjila’si: Welcome to our video premiere of L’nuey’s Foundational Terms: Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. Over the next month, we will be highlighting a number of f...oundational terms and concepts connected to Aboriginal and Treaty rights and how they pertain to the Mi’kmaq of Prince Edward Island (Epekwitk). The terms include: Aboriginal Rights, Treaty Rights, Self-Governance, Section 35 of the Constitution Act, the Marshall Decision, the Sparrow Decision, the Indian Act, and the Mi’kmaq-PEI-Canada Framework Agreement. Understanding the terms connected to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights will help to set a course for a brighter future together. I encourage all Islanders to take this opportunity to increase their understanding of the terms and concepts related to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, and how they apply to the relationship between Mi’kmaq and non-Mi’kmaq people. This can help people better understand the context of our current situation, our past, and how we can work together in the future on the road to reconciliation. - Chief Darlene Bernard (Lennox Island First Nation). These terms are key to understanding past, present, and future matters involving Indigenous people, which are relevant to all Canadians. We need to bridge the gap of understanding in order to move forward in a positive and informed way. This campaign will give Islanders a chance to involve themselves and learn more.- Chief Junior Gould (Abegweit First Nation). #Mikmaq #LnuProud #AboriginalRights #TreatyRights #PeaceAndFriendship #WeAreAllTreatyPeople #TRC #Reconciliation #Terms
Lorri St. Onge, Director of Indigenous Justice for the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI, was recently appointed to the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee for PEI. The Governor General in Council, on the recommendation from the Minister of Justice, appointed Lorri to be a member of the Independent Judicial Advisory Committee for a term ending on September 30, 2022. Congratulations Lorri on your recent appointment!
I strongly encourage all those who are interested in developing their leadership skills to apply. Sounds like it is going to be an amazing training.
We are proud to be part of the Eagle Feather initiative with the RCMP that provides an opportunity for the Eagle Feather to be used as an option to swear legal oaths. The Eagle Feathers will be distributed to all detachments across PEI and be available to victims, witnesses and police officers. Today was a step forward towards strengthening our relationship and our ongoing collaboration with the RCMP.
