I read an article the other day; about a company that was not going to allow its employees to wear a poppy on their uniform this week because it may be insensitive to some. Reading this made me cry. I heard on the radio the other day; that no one is holding Remembrance Day ceremonies at their cenotaph’s due to COVID-19 and the risks involved in gathering.... Hearing this made me cry. I spoke to my girlfriend via FaceTime the other day; whose husband died some years ago now in Afghanistan. She still misses him every day, and their child has grown up without a father. Her heartache made me cry. I am sad this Remembrance Day. I am sad for the lack of poppies I see on lapels. I am sad for all the people that are more worried about shopping and elections and home décor about all the luxuries we have in our lives that are GIFTED to us by the blood of so many soldiers. I am sad there are rallies and protests, but the freedom to have those is on the backs of people we are not celebrating not in the traditional, stoic yet proud, let the tears flow while you sing O’Canada way that I have become accustomed to in my 42 years of life in this great country. I am a PROUD CANADIAN. I am raising my children to be proud Canadians, which includes doing all things Canadian: minding manners, helping strangers, and shedding tears for the brave men and women that fought to keep our country the TRUE NORTH STRONG AND FREE. Some of you may not be celebrating, or may be celebrating in a way that is different than in the past whichever you choose, it’s your choice, and I will respect it because that CHOICE is yours as a result of the people I plan on standing in silent respect for at 11:11 on Wednesday, November 11th, 2020. Your freedom of choice came from them. I can only hope you will choose to give them the respect they deserve. Peace.
