By far my favourite design quote from Paula Scher. This quote speaks volumes about the value of design experience. . Here’s the backstory: . During an initial client meeting, Paula Scher (world renowned graphic designer) sketched a logo concept on a napkin in just a few seconds. This logo ultimately became the new identity for Citibank a now globally recognizable logo and one of the biggest banks in the world. .... At the time (1998) there was some controversy around this logo, due to its hefty price tag (of approx $1.5 million). People were perplexed - how could a logo that took 34 seconds to come up with be worth so much? Scher’s comment to the media was this quote. Love it! . With 34 years experience under her belt combined with obvious talent, she was able to side-step the standard design processes and produce what is the perfect basis of a logo design, in nearly an instant. Hello! Thought I would re-introduce myself for anyone new to this page and to give more background about myself and my experiences. My name is Michelle Lackey and I’m the founder/creative director of M-Dash Design Ltd. Some of you may know me but for those who don’t, here is a little bit about me... . . Art and design has always been a huge passion and talent of mine ever since I was young. After graduating from the 3 year Graphic Design program at Georgian College, I worked ...as an in-house graphic designer at Casino Rama (2 years) and then, Inscape Corp. (4 years). There, I gained a tonne of knowledge in marketing, branding, print design & print production. . . Tired of commuting and wanting to stay close to home for my new baby girl, I decided to take on a graphic design role in Barrie at Kempenfelt Graphics (now Cober Solutions). I progressed quickly there. First, by taking on a number of the larger design clients, then becoming Design Team Lead, along with design coordination and studio supervision. I spent a total of 6 years there. During this time as well, I returned to Georgian College part-time and obtained a certificate in Business Marketing and Web Design. (Life-long learning is the name of my game!) . . From there, I was approached to come on board as Creative Director for a local start-up. Excited by the opportunity to contribute to something new and take on a lead role, I accepted and dedicated almost two years there. While I gained a lot of experience in this role, the dynamic and culture wasn’t what I was looking for in my career. So, I left to begin my own venture! Which brings us here.
