May 12, 2021 Fish and Wildlife Update Officers have determined the bear involved is a mature female grizzly bear. It is not known whether the female grizzly was accompanied by cub(s), but based on evidence, a single bear was involved in the attack, and it was likely a defensive encounter and not a predatory attack. Fish and wildlife officers have closed the area around Waiparous Village Trail System north of the village due to the bear attack. Officers have been actively att...empting to locate and trap the bear involved, but there has been no sign of bear activity in the area over the past few days. The area will remain closed for at least another two weeks as officers continue to monitor the area. The trails are clearly marked with signage and closure tape, and we are asking people not to enter the closure for their own safety. Under the Wildlife Act, it is unlawful to enter an area closed by a wildlife officer. This will be strictly enforced and people entering a closure area could be charged and fined. The area map is attached. See more

In collaboration with researchers at the University of Alberta and the University of Waterloo, Alberta Conservation Association developed a short, voluntary online landowner survey. Landowners can answer questions about their property, the number of hunting requests they receive, how many hunters they say yes to, and the factors they consider when allowing or denying access. ACA wants to hear your thoughts on what’s working, and what could be done better. Survey deadline is February 16th https://www.ab-conservation.com//hunter-recruitment-and-t/
