MD Weight Loss 03.07.2021

Good morning everyone. I hope you are having an awesome Tuesday! Daily reflection time is important for so many reasons. I use it to work through any negative emotions I’m feeling and to celebrate the positives in my life. Today I took the time to send a quick encouraging message to a friend I know needs a little pick me up today while I was out enjoying the silence. Have a wonderful day and work on being intentional in building some quiet time into your day to day routine.

So yesterday I was watching the news and one of the anchors said something to the effect of how she got ready to go out for a run but that she got outside, realized how windy it was and turned around and went back in the house instead, presumably skipping her run. It’s too windy, too cold, too wet, too hot...all too often we allow ourselves to find excuses for not doing something we know is going to be beneficial to us. So today, I thought about her as I was out in the rain, wind, cold and stinging ice pellets...yesterday would have been better than putting it off until today! Happy Saturday everyone! If this encourages just one person to put aside their excuses for the day and go out and enjoy whatever the day throws at you, I’ve done my job a good is good for your your and your and your soul.

Things that made my heart happy today: A patient telling me she cried after her last appointment when I told her she could stop her BP medication because she has always been told that once she was on it, she would likely be on it forever. 2 weeks into our weight loss program and she is down 14 lb and BP normalized on no meds. A patient calling to tell me she has now lost over 100 lb and that she was told that had she not lost the 96 lb before she contracted COVID and had to ...be hospitalized, she likely would have been on a ventilator or died. She's home and starting to exercise again and has lost 102 lb since last August and feels like she has her life back at 69. A patient telling me her family doctor was ecstatic with her weight loss (some of them actually don't give them much positive feedback despite how well they are doing and I find this very sad). She is 6 months in, 75 lb down, more energetic, sleeping better and off BP meds. A patient proud of the fact that someone has noticed all her hard work and complimented her on how toned her legs are looking and how strong she looks now. One of my first "test" patients sending me pictures of her 6 years later, in the same outfit she took a picture in after she had lost 30 lb...still fits! I love my job. I love working with my weight loss patients. I love the fact that in the past 6 years I have deprescribed more medication than I have initiated. Drinking enough water during the day is essential but it can be tricky to remember to do it! This is how I manage to get it done during a work day. 3 litres on my desk...every time I come back to the charting room I drink with the goal of all 3 litres being gone by the time I head home. Here are some other tricks to try: Set an alarm to go off every hour to remind you to stand / move / drink water. Invest in a really big jug, fill it at the start of the day and drink it al...l by the end of the day. Having it right there is easier than trying to remember when you last had a glass of water or how many you have had during the day. I’m very visual so this works best for me. If you only have a small bottle, put hair ties around the bottle and move them from the top to the bottom for every bottle you consume. So, if you have a 1 litre container, put 4 hair ties around it and every time you empty it, move a hair tie until you have consumed your 4 litres. Do you have ways you remember to hydrate? Low carb meals don’t have to be fancy. Breakfast sandwich on Carbonaut bread. Low sugar ketchup, 1/2 fat mayo, 2 scrambled eggs, low sodium turkey bacon and some part skim mozzarella cheese. Yummy and filling.
