The MD Exit Strategy

I have worked as a physician on the front-lines of health care since 2001. By the Fall of 2018, working as a physician in the Province of Ontario had left me exhausted. In 2015, I saw the provincial government unilaterally slash my income by 30% with 2 weeks notice. The intense vitriol and low morale I witnessed during that difficult time has only gotten worse since. Morale among my colleagues had reached as low a level as I have ever had the misfortune of witnessing. Plainl...y speaking, medicine has ceased to be a fulfilling career for many of us, particularly within the confines of the single-payer system, where the profession has been reduced to various physician groups competing for a slice of an ever-diminishing pie of health-care dollars, all the while looking over its shoulder at the Provincial Regulatory College and its constant threat of responding to frivolous patient complaints. I recognize that physicians occupy a special place in Canadian society and that we have a unique set of skills that can be of benefit outside of the present health-care framework. I decided to make it my mission, in this era of low morale and high physician burnout, to assist my peers and colleagues with finding their smiles once again, by bringing them opportunities for side-gigs, investment opportunities and if desired, a full exit from clinical practice.
