Canter towards it, see what happens--- If time after time you can get the horse to a good distance, and if the horse has the instincts to rock back, jump up, and give the fence some room, then it may well be a go. But if you and the horse struggle with this, if the horse chips in, jumps over its shoulder, hangs its front end, frequently knocks the plank, why would you ever think moving up is a good idea? Wait until your skills and the abilities of your horse match the requirements of the challenge. It is simple common sense.
