Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the important role Paramedic Services play in keeping our communities safe and healthy has never been more apparent. Paramedic Services Week 2021, which takes place May 23-29th, is an opportunity to recognize the tireless work and dedication of paramedics. As we continue to work our way through COVID-19 pandemic, paramedics are playing a vital role in a number of settings, States Gerry Schriemer, Chief of EMS Medavie Health Services West. They have to take on new responsibilities. The stress levels have elevated due to the importance of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Paramedic Services Week 2021 is a chance for us to thank them and to recognize their unwavering commitment.

With nearly half of Canadians reporting a deterioration in their mental health due to anxieties and uncertainties associated with the pandemic, this year’s Mental Health Week is as important as ever. Medavie Health Services West took quick action during the pandemic to ensure patient safety and a healthy workforce. Paramedics in Alberta and Saskatchewan cha...nged ambulance configuration, increased disinfecting procedures, completed respiratory FIT testing and all paramedics were provided with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when responding to patient calls and continued to provide necessary education and onboarding. Saskatchewan Paramedics working in the community also began specimen collection with patients who were unable to get to a testing centre, including residents living in long-term care facilities. That focus on integrated care continues as Medavie Health Services West works with multi-disciplinary teams at Saskatchewan Air Ambulance, in emergency departments and with Saskatoon City Police as part of their tactical support unit to keep patients safe. #CPSW2020 #HeartOurHealthCareWorkers

Today the Government of Saskatchewan announced that they are investing 2.9 million into EMS services in Saskatoon and Regina. Our service has seen an 11 percent increase in call volumes since 2014/15 responding to 31,900 calls per year. This investment will have an immediate impact on the stressors our Paramedics face daily. Thank You to the Government of Saskatchewan and to the Saskatchewan Health Authority for the long standing partnership that enables us to respond to residents in their time of need.
