Breast milk is important for the optimal growth and development of full-term infants, and it’s even more important for premature babies. However, sometimes breastfeeding directly can be challenging. In many cases, moms opt for pumping because it is a great way to initiate milk production. Did you know that milk from moms of premature infants contains more fats and secretory immunoglobulin than milk from moms of full-term babies. Why is this important for preemie babies? Beca...use preemie babies also have immature gastrointestinal tracts, which can cause difficulties with digestion and absorption of nutrients, so they need a food that’s easy for their delicate guts to process. Breast milk contains enzymes that help your baby with digestion, as well as epidermal growth factor, which in turn helps their intestine mature. Amazing right??? One of the ways that human babies are able to maintain rapid brain growth which requires a lot of energy is due to the length of time they receive breast milk. The same goes for preemie babies! #WorldPrematurityDay

Premature infants immature body organs and pathways are vulnerable to inflammation, nutritional deficiencies and other stresses. Amazingly, mothers who deliver prematurely produce milk with higher concentrations of many of the protective components that downregulate these stresses. This is especially true of the mother's colostrum and transitional milk. #WPD2020 #WorldPrematurityDay

Caring for the future of premature babies means giving them the best possible start to life. The fat in human milk helps to enhance the development of the baby's brain and neurologic tissues, which is especially important for premature infants. if you want to consider pumping post-birth, please contact the Symphony rental stations in your area. AND partners should not feel left out just because they are not lactating; their body will produce oxytocin as they interact with their baby and especially if they foster skin-to-skin contact. Research has shown that partners who have regular interaction with their baby will have the same level of oxytocin as the mother at both six weeks and six months after baby is born.
