ARTIST SPOTLIGHT! Shining a light on artists in Wood Buffalo. Dawn Booth is a local business owner of the marketing and communications service Media Booth. Sh...e is also the Editor-in-Chief of YMM Parent, President of NorthWord Magazine and a freelance journalist in media, tourism and real estate industries. "Both poetry and journalism have been what defines me. Although one is about experiences and the other is about facts, I believe, together, they both seek the truth. And in my writing, I often intertwine the two to show, rather than tell. I started writing as a child and had my first poem The Night Before Easter published in The Eganville Leader newspaper when I was in the fourth grade. The poem was a spin-off to Clement Clarke Moore’s Twas the Night Before Christmas. Eight years following, I received an editorial high school internship position in the same newspaper. It was the beginning of my journalism career. When I reflect on life, I remember myself as a young girl writing in a journal, a young adult learning about the field of storytelling and as a professional now mentoring the craft onto others. What do I love about poetry writing? It doesn’t come with a deadline it’s not fast. The words can be savoured and read slowly. As for journalistic writing, my preference is human-interest because it allows me to bring the two literary worlds together to make stories memorable to get behind the headline and explore the subject."
