And yet another person who should have known better has made headlines because of non-essential travel. Linda Hasenfratz has resigned from her position as a member of Ontario’s vaccine task force because of a decision to spend the holidays in Barbados. The number of politicians and healthcare leaders who thought the rules didn’t apply to them is astonishing. Most people were at home under some level of lockdown - unable to see family and friends or mourning a loss to this horrible virus or simply dreaming of a sunny vacation. After pressure from the public and the unions of healthcare workers, another Ontario hospital executive has been fired for travelling during the pandemic. Paul Woods, former CEO of London Health Sciences Centre travelled to the US five times to visit family. This is yet another case to file under - What was he thinking? First it was politicians coming out of the woodwork. So many that one has to question the integrity of our elected officials. Now it's a health care executive? There's no excuse for St. Joe's and Niagara Health's CEO who spent weeks in the Dominican Republic over the holidays. What was he thinking? Of course he regrets his trip. Rod Philips' shocking arrogance could cost him his political career. An error in judgement is one thing - the decision to go on an extravagant Caribbean vacation while the province is in COVID lockdown is bad enough. Then add the calculated hypocrisy of posting videos about sacrifice and how we should behave during lockdown as if he were still at home in front of the fireplace.
