In the health field, patients must be treated with the outmost care regardless of who they are. Health care is a human right and every person should receive the highest level of care regardless of their age, skin colour, religion, political stance, socioeconomic status and gender especially when their life is on the line. . . Recently, Canadians have witnessed the medical negligence of Joyce Echaquan, an indigenous woman of the Attikamekw community, who came in the hospital ...at Joliette for a stomach ache. She was then given morphine by the nurses despite her objections since she is allergic to morphine. She asked these health care practitioners for help but was met with insults, disrespect and neglect which ultimately lead to her death. This is unacceptable as it breaches multiple counts of biomedical ethics. As future practitioners in the health field, we are mindful of these medical injustices and discrimination in order to head towards building a better health care system for BIPOC communities especially the indigenous communities who’s systemic abuse in the heath field has been normalized.
