Though this opinion piece is focused squarely on video games, its sentiment applies to all forms of gaming, including--yep--board games. I think it's an important watch, especially for non-gamers, so I encourage you to share it with your friends and family members who "just don't get it". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afjbOpnJni0
Save the date. Pips & Peeps Con, Cornwall's first board game convention, is back for a second year! And MeepleMobile will be there once again! May 30-31, 2020. 119 Pitt Street. Stay tuned for more details.
Snowed in this weekend? Sounds like board game time to me! (Post pictures of your gaming adventures this weekend.)
With Valentine's Day fast approaching, here is a list of great two-player games to play with that special someone...all of which can be found in the MeepleMobile collection!
One of the biggest barriers to entry into contemporary board gaming is perception. Most people assume board games are either casual, dice-driven games like Sorry! or Monopoly, or lengthy, rules-intensive titles like Axis & Allies or Dungeons & Dragons. They fail to realize the myriad of titles in between; games that are easy to jump into, offer meaningful decisions to players, and additional depth and strategy for those looking for it.... Once you realize this, the next barrier is being overwhelmed with the sheer number of games out there. Luckily there are seasoned gamers such as myself who can help guide you. Be patient and open-minded--there's a game out there for everyone.
More than anything, board games benefit from an open mind; a willingness to try and learn new things. Too often we default to what's familiar, fast, and easy: watching TV, browsing the internet, playing on our phones. This is not unlike eating fast food. It's fine to have every once in a while, but too much and it starts to become unhealthy. Board games are like a home-cooked meal. They take more time and effort, and you may not get the results you wanted right away, but it w...ill always be more satisfying in the end. "Food" for thought. Have a great weekend, and play more games!
Not long ago, I had the pleasure of teaching games to the good folks of the Tri-County Literacy Council as part of their end-of-year team building activities. They had a blast playing Pandemic, Castle Panic, and Timeline! Wishing everyone on the team the best for 2020! Thank you for choosing MeepleMobile!
New Year's Resolution: Play More Games!
Hey, gamers! As the year draws to a close, I wanted to share with you the "Most Played Games of 2019" from the MeepleMobile collection. It's been an interesting first year, and I thank everyone who gave MeepleMobile a chance by coming out to an event and playing some games. I look forward to playing games with you all in the new year!
BoardGameGeek.com, my favourite website for board gaming, just released their 2019 holiday gift guide. Check it out! You will notice many similarities between it and the list I posted earlier this week. You will also notice that many of these games are in the MeepleMobile collection to try! https://boardgamegeek.com/w/page/Board_Game_Gift_Guide_2019
Cosmo recently released a list of top 19 board games to play in 2019. Among them were four different versions of Monopoly and two games requiring players to smash things on their faces. It's articles like this that relegate board gaming as nothing more than a children's hobby in the eyes of society. To combat this somewhat, I've released a list of 19 games you need to try. These games are great starting points to get into the hobby, and all can be found in the MeepleMobi...le collection. A list of games to play with friends and family this holiday season...or anytime of the year, really.
Teaching games, especially to those newer to board games, can be a challenge. This article sums up nicely some of the things I've learned and try to remember each time I introduce a new game to players. I will add that it's also important to enjoy teaching and watching players at the table have that "ah ha!" moment.
There are many benefits to playing board games with your children. They can hone math and language skills, improve memory and critical thought, and can even teach rudimentary science and history depending on the game. There are a lot of options to choose from (besides the ones Scholastic sells in their online store) and it can be daunting, but most games indicate an age range on the box, and there are many, easy-to-find online resources that will show you what's in the box, i...ncluding digital copies of the rules. Feel free to send me a message and I'd be happy to make recommendations as well! What games do you like playing with your family? Let me know in the comments below!
