Highly textured encaustic works are very attractive to art viewers..they want to know how the effect is achieved. This short video from R&F paints in Kingston, NY shows how it’s done. Note that the underpainting colour is important as it will show through below the accretions.

Over the last few years it’s been necessary for me to create pictures of the ocean shore. It’s odd because I hate the heat, but the idea of isolation on a beach, the only sound being the wave rhythms - like a heartbeat - the exciting sense of what lies beneath, are compelling to me. Clearly many others feel the same pull. Every picture tells a story.....I noticed a couple discussing one of my pieces hung in the gallery. When I approached and introduced myself they told me that they’d just returned from a memorable trip to the east coast where they’d done some hiking along a bluff over the water. Looking out, they were able to see a whale just below the surface! This picture spoke to them of that wonderful sight. ‘Deep Blue’ 16 x 16 encaustic.
